Which is better - to read the book first before the movie or vice versa?

if Im aware that there's a book/novel that isnt some sort of pulp fiction (ie harry potter) then ill make a strong effort to read the story b4hand.
it makes the movie much more interesting, i guess

was just discussing this with friends over some drinks 2nite how I enjoyed the bus ride scene on "Fight Club" whereupon the definition of what men's behavior/societal attributes is being questioned was a good central theme to Palaniuk's novel that hopefully got conveyed to those understood it

I just listed fight club in my "overrated movies" and I really couldn't get through it, after more than one attempt. I may just revisit the movie. AND the book. The book first

go beyond the perception that this is just another movie about doods kicking each others asses with Brad Pitt "im so kewl & shirtless" scenes and realize its more about the state of masculinity in this day & age & breaking down social norms expected of men.
