St. John's walk-ons jump through hoops
Shorthanded Red Storm invites the student body to try out -- but can anybody play?

    http://espn.go.com/new-york/story/_/...oking-good-men

NEW YORK -- While most of you were sleeping Sunday morning, St. John's was searching for a few good men.

It was pitch-black outside, but the lights were on full blast in Taffner Field House when assistant coach Mike Dunlap blew his whistle at 5:51 a.m. With that, 26 prospective men's basketball players gathered around Dunlap at midcourt, to begin a morning that none of them will likely ever forget.

Less than 48 hours earlier, St. John's had staged a rousing Midnight Madness celebration next door at Carnesecca Arena, to officially tip off the 2011-12 season. But there were only eight players to introduce to the crowd. After three incoming freshmen were declared academically ineligible last month, the Johnnies were suddenly faced with a serious dilemma -- they don't even have enough bodies to play five-on-five in practice.

A great pick-up for my Trojans. Just gotta keep him away from the sauce!

USC basketball: Trojans get verbal commit from ex-Wake Forest guard
J.T. Terrell, a former Wake Forest guard who is currently enrolled at junior college, verbally committed to transfer to USC on Wednesday afternoon, according to multiple sources close to the situation who were not authorized to speak on the record.

Terrell, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound guard, will have two seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2012-13. He was considered one of the top high school guard recruits in 2010 and is arguably the top overall junior college prospect nationally this year.

He's expected to sign on Nov. 9, the first day of the fall signing period. He would be a great boost for a team that this season has zero seniors in its rotation. He's noted for his athleticism and three-point shooting ability.

At Wake Forest in 2010-11, he played in 32 games as a freshman and was second on the team in scoring (11.1 points per game). He also ranked second on the team in assists (1.6)) and fourth in steals (0.7).

He scored in double figures in 16 games, including three games of 20 or more points. His 32 points on Nov. 11 against Iowa, a game in which he made seven of 11 three-point shots, were a season-high for an Atlantic Coast Conference freshman.

He left Wake Forest in September. He was arrested days before he withdrew and charged with driving while impaired, according to a statement his attorney issued through the school.

It's fair to assume that one major reason Terrell committed to USC is because of Trojans junior forward Ari Stewart, who also transferred from Wake Forest to USC. The two were teammates at Wake Forest in 2010-11 and Stewart was Terrell's host on his official visit to USC's campus last weekend, sources said.

Terrell is considered a top college prospect at West Charlotte High School (N.C.). According to his bio at Wake Forest, ESPN ranked him as the No. 14 shooting guard nationally as a senior and the No. 49th overall prospect.

This season, Terrell is expected to play at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Wash. He was also being recruited by Memphis, Washington, Gonzaga and Rutgers, sources said.

    Congressman urges college hearings

    http://espn.go.com/college-sports/st...college-sports

WASHINGTON -- The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee is urging the panel to hold hearings on antitrust and other issues in college sports, including the recent series of conference realignments.

"It has become increasingly clear to me that the combination of issues and challenges facing intercollegiate sports have reached a tipping point calling for congressional attention," Michigan Rep. John Conyers wrote to the committee chairman, Texas Republican Lamar Smith, in a letter released Thursday. The committee said in a statement that it is reviewing Conyers' request.

Several major colleges have recently announced plans to switch conferences, including Syracuse and Pittsburgh from the Big East to the ACC, and Texas A&M from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference. The Big East now wants to expand to 12 football teams.

Critics have voiced concerns that the shuffling could lead to a handful of 16-team "superconferences" that could break away from the NCAA or dictate looser rules to stay competitive. The moves have raised new questions about the role of money in college sports.

Conyers said in his letter that he was concerned about the impact that conference realignment would have on lower-profile sports teams and smaller and independent universities -- especially historically black colleges and universities.

The NCAA did not immediately return email and telephone messages Thursday, but NCAA president Mark Emmert recently told The Associated Press he was concerned about the perception that money is driving the decisions, saying, "this is not the NFL, the NBA, it's not a business." He urged school presidents to consider factors besides revenue when choosing conference affiliation.

Conyers also wants to look into due process for athletes, the NCAA's use of athletes' images in video games without compensation, limitations of athletic scholarships, and the costs to players from injuries sustained during games among other issues.

He said he understood that some committee members might have reservations about delving into these issues.

"I would note, however, that modern-day college athletics is a massive business, with widespread economic impact on athletes, their families, broadcasters, and fans as well as universities and colleges all over the country," Conyers wrote.

Jeff Hathaway being paid $1 by Big East

    http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bask...ast-consultant

STORRS, Conn. -- Former Connecticut Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway will be paid $1 a year as a consultant for the Big East conference, a job that allows him to keep his position as chairman of the powerful NCAA men's basketball committee.

Hathaway retired from UConn in September after Susan Herbst, the school's new president, ordered an outside review of his handling of the department.

In order to remain on the basketball committee, Hathaway must be employed by an NCAA member school or conference. Hathaway was hired on Monday as a consultant for the Big East.

Under terms of his separation agreement, Hathaway's Big East salary will be deducted from his nearly $700,000 salary at UConn.

UConn spokesman Mike Enright said Friday the school has received a letter from Hathaway's attorney detailing the $1 salary.
