Van Gundy and ESPN play-by-play colleague Mike Breen will each announce some nonconference matchups with the NBA lockout eliminating their normal jobs during November.

Steve Lavin at St. John's practice

    http://espn.go.com/new-york/ncb/stor...actice-surgery

NEW YORK -- St. John's basketball coach Steve Lavin returned to practice on Tuesday for the first time since undergoing prostate cancer surgery on Oct. 6.

Lavin missed the team's regular season opener on Monday night, a 74-59 win over William & Mary. It is still undecided whether Lavin will coach the team's next game, Wednesday night versus Lehigh.

"I'm definitely feeling closer to full strength, and eager for a return to the sidelines," Lavin said in a statement released by the school Tuesday. "I've been pleased with the progress made by our young team. During this period of recuperating, (assistant) Coach (Mike) Dunlap and the staff have worked in an impressive, collaborative manner to prepare our team for the challenges ahead."

Lavin added that's he's been staying in contact with the coaches and players and has been monitoring the team's progress by watching DVDs of practices and games.

"Naturally we still have much to do in terms of implementing our system and style of play, but the effort from this team has been outstanding," he said.

Lavin's surgery was deemed "a success" by the coach in a statement released by the school, and the coach has been consulting with his doctor daily about when to return to the team.

This is Lavin's second season at St. John's. He led the Red Storm to a 21-12 record and their first NCAA tournament bid since 2002.

Only one player from last season's team returned but Lavin put together an impressive nine-man recruiting class. However, three of those players were ruled ineligible for the fall semester.

Dave, The only reason your man Quinn Synder did not run back to Mike Krzyzewski for an assistant coaches spot(That he once had during the 90's), Was, Quinn Synder disgraced himself and the Duke program in regards to the un-ethical activities that was taking place at the University of Missouri during the early to mid 2000's, My man, Dave, The North Carolina vs Michigan State game tommorrow night, Is the most insane nonsense that i have ever seen in my 43 years of following the

Game of basketball, My man(Cats playing on a Military ship/LOL), Dave, The game would have alot more meaning if those cats(Or future college crews), Play at the Rucker(At least the Rucker has mad history for basketball, My man/LOL), Dave, I was very surprised that you and other cats from Connecticut did not touch the best cats from Connecticut thread earlier this week(I was omre than ready to build with cats from Connecticut on the list of cats who we're nice coming out of the state of Connecticut, My man.

    Mike -

Quin is doing OK ... he's an asst for the Lakers now

The game on the ship is pretty different ... I'm sure it will have meaning to some folks - and if not, will just turn out to be a good show ... I read somewhere where another one is being planned for next year

I remember seeing your CT hoop thread ... you seemed to have covered just about all of the notable players, so I didn't have anything meaningful to add (couldn't think of any notable CT natives at the time, that you didn't mention)

Can someone tell me why cats from Both Carolina and Mich State "ain't played outside since the sixth grade"? Yo, Pearl Washington used to play in the park at PS 305 in Brooklyn every summer and get his ass busted by Fly Williams!

These cats from the two schools did not come from the streets of Brooklyn or the Bronx!

And a sunny, nice day on an aircraft carrier, and they worrying about wind.....COME ON, SON!!!!!!

Fletch, Can you build with me on those Pearl vs Fly Matchups at PS 305 in Brooklyn, MY man(Exhibit A:Timeframe, Who else was playing besides Pearl vs Fly, Was Jocko, Kenny Charles(Buffalo Braves/Atanta Hawks), World,B.Free, Curt Sumpter(New York Tech), Phil Foreman(New York Tech), Geoff Huston(Canarise HS/Knicks), Larry Washington(Canarsie HS/Texas Tech/St.John's)Etc, Also playing in the same games at PS.305, Since all of those cats are from Brownsville, My man/LOL, Fletch, Fly would have demolished Pearl during

the late 70's thru the 80's(Up until 1988 when Fly caught a few in the Butt in Jamaica,Queens, After Fly and a few stickup kids from Brownsville tried to run up on my man James Ryans(Legendary HS, College, Pro-Am Summer league coach from Jamaica,Queens during the 70's,80's,90's,2000's), To sting James Ryans for his money in 1988(That incident was in the Daily news too, My man/LOL).

Mike Krzyzewski ties Bobby Knight for most career Division I men's wins

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=313160150

DURHAM, N.C. -- Mike Krzyzewski tied Bob Knight atop the Division I men's career wins list with his 902nd victory in No. 6 Duke's 96-55 rout against Presbyterian on Saturday.
Ryan Kelly scored 17 points for the Blue Devils (2-0). They shot 61 percent and used a huge first-half run to put the game out of reach and deliver another milestone victory to their Hall of Fame coach.

Coach K improved to 902-284 during his 37th season as a college coach at Army and Duke. He can pass Knight -- his coach and mentor -- on Tuesday night against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden.

Al'Lonzo Coleman had 11 points for Presbyterian (1-1).
