    Your go to plug ins

What are your favourite plug ins? The one you seem to use time and time again. The ones you know well enough to get the job done quick.
    Why are they your choice?

OK ill start it up. Two of my go to plugs are the new Echo & Pulveriser units in Reason 6. I like em because they have their own unique sound which adds to whatever you put them on, Like a lot of the vintage units back in the day.

The TAL-Dub takes the cake for me. Also, the TAL-Bassline is pretty decent. Both are free of charge.

I like vintage warmer and vinyl as a combo.

The TAL (Togu Audo Line) plugins are not same quality as the Arturia line, IMO. But, TAL plugins have a really nice analog sound. Especially, for free!

Any h.g. fortune plugin was my go to synths for atmospheric pads. The presets are thick and cut through a track like butter. Too bad the plugins are not configured for Macs.

I have been using the Sylenth for leads it cuts thru the mix really good( Not as good as my sh 101 but for a plug-in it's great). I have also been using the Spectrasonics Omnisphere od pads and textures its amazing but takes up so much space and is pricey as hell.

My go to instruments are definitely Trilian (which hogs all my RAM) and Diva (which hogs all my CPU).

Trilian is just amazing for bass, it can do a lot more too but I wouldn't even bother using anything else for bass anymore.
Diva has just been the best soft synth I've ever played with, it's so enjoyable to just sit down noodling away with it for hours.

For effects The Soundtoys bundle has made nearly everything in my effects folder almost redundant. They are a bit on the expensive side but are worth every penny. Echoboy and Decapitator get the most use.

    Well for Synths:
    - Rob Papen Albino & Punch (drum synth) - powerful plugins with plenty of cool and modern presets
    - Tal Noize Maker - free plugin, warm and rich analogue sound
    - ES2 - Logic built-in virtual analog synth...not really a friendly GUI but when u get a little used there are endless possibilities

    Effects:
    - D16's Toraverb & Devastor - amazing plugs for a cheap price....expecially Toraverb is my fav for huge verb stabs
    - PSP Audioware Vintagewarmer 2....wherever u use it (on single channel or master) your tunes get beautiful :D
    - PSP Audioware P85 for delays and N20 for filtering
    - iZotope Vynil - free plugin that makes your tracks sound "older"....I love it

    - Izotope Iris
    - Linplug's Alpha
    - Korg Legacy Collection MS-20, Polysix, and Legacy Cell (KLC-1)
    - NI FM8
    - Waldorf's PPG 3.V
    - Image Line's Groovemachine
    - All that come with Logic Pro

    For Effects
    - Izotope Ozone 5
    - Korg Legacy Collection MDE-X FX
    - All that comes with Logic Pro
    - All that comes with Live 8

I like the stuff I have from Britain (ImpOSCar 2, DCAM Synth Squad, and Tremor), but I still haven't gotten them to fit my House Music.

I would add another question: how do you choose your plug-ins?

I'm an amateur producer and haven't been close enough to what I expected to come out off my head and fingers, and I've always been confused seeing the tons of plug-ins available.

    Do you follow forums/magazines recommandations?

Since moving my setup to a laptop, I've only used two VST's, Geist and Z3TA+2.
I need a good filter, though. Looking at Etch, when the money's around.

Don't forget, Cytomic should be releasing The Drop in the coming months and from the demos so far I definitely think that it's worth holding out for.

Forums are definitely a good place to start but becareful because you will get a lot of mixed opinions about every plugin. One person will say you must have X and another person will say get Y. Audio demos from the plugin can give you a general vibe of it but never tell the whole story.

I find magazine reviews to generally pick out the good points more so than the bad but can be great because they will introduce you to plugins you didn't know before and sometimes in a review there can be a little section showing you similar/alternative plugins.

When you find some you think you may like just check out their demos. Most companies have pretty decent demo periods.

As important is knowing synthesis and general sound design. A good general feel for synths lets you find your way around it easier and you'll know a lot better when something just 'clicks' with you. Different synths make you do different things, don't know how but generally each synth I use makes me go in a certain direction.

I find i'm using Geist and microtoniq a lot for drums now. I've also been using more of the Waves plugs now that they're selling them ala carte. The renaissance compressor gets used a lot as well as the H-eq and C6. Don't laugh but I really like that Tony Mazarati vocal plug. It's kind of a one trick pony (maybe two tricks) but it sounds really good without hardly any effort. I've also been using a lot of the audio damage plugs. They're simple but creative and they sound great. As far as synths go I really like the Xils stuff - particularly the Polykb. I also really like the Op-x oberheim emulation and some of the other Reaktor synths like Akkord.

I think the next purchase will probably be Halion 4 and then probably either the waves cla/jjp classic compressors or the waves SSL bundle.

I use Ultrabeat for drums, Linplug Alpha 3 for bass, Rob Papen Albino 3 is the synth I turn to first. For EQ and effects I usually use the Logic built-in stuff. I use Melodyne on EVERY vocal, I don't care how good it is, that shit makes it better! If I am mastering myself I will use PSP Vintage Warmer II among other things, if not I will just use Logic's Adaptive Limiter set to keep the track from over peaking.

Trial and error. A lot of software companies provide downloadable demos of stuff. I'm also in college for audio engineering so again, I have more access to stuff as well as I've been at this for years and just have put in a good amount of trial and error.

You have to play with the stuff and come to your own conclusions.

    Personal Examples....
I don't care for Waves Plug-ins. They are boring to look at and I don't care for the iLok key copywrite protection. So I use iZotope (and soon, Universal Audio) products instead.

I find Pro Tools to be extremely counterproductive to use when compared to Logic and/or Live. I don't think the plug-ins are nearly as good either and that Pro Tools is something of a running joke compared to comparative DAW applications.

I also recently dumped all my Rob Papen synths because they were not fitting my vision of my music.

There's really no right and wrong answer. What works for you is a very subjective thing and there are a lot of products out there to suit your needs. So go start testing and checking them out. You may find that you love Pro Tools, can't work without Waves Plug-ins, and drop a dance floor hit using Rob Papen synths! ;-)
