Beating back growing grassroots activism and surprisingly high-profile opposition candidates, Vladimir Putin was once again elected to the Russian presidency on Sunday after spending four years as prime minister.

Exit polls suggested Putin won about 60 percent of the vote, according to the BBC, as he took back the job he originally held for 12 years before term limits forced him to step aside (at least symbolically). Given his party’s stranglehold on the Russian political system, he was widely expected to win.



Mikhail Prokhorov, the New Jersey Nets owner who injected some star power into the election when he announced his candidacy in December, finished in the single digits, exit polls suggest. The six-foot-eight bachelor and martial arts buff made his fortune in metals and banking. Prokhorov ran as an independent without the support of any political party, and made waves when he said that if elected he would free jailed oil magnate Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Poll officials said that turnout was higher than the last presidential election in 2008, but many reports also allege widespread voter fraud, according to the BBC. For example, election watchdog Golos [Russian lang.] reported “carousel voting,” in which voters are bused around to different polling stations in order to cast more than one ballot.

Of course, it was also alleged voter fraud in the November Parliamentary elections that sparked the unprecedented protests over the last few months in Russia. “These elections cannot be considered legitimate in any way,” one of the protest movement’s leaders, Vladimir Ryzhkov, told the BBC.

A rally on Monday night in central Moscow is already scheduled, and anti-corruption leader Aleksei Navalny said that following the rally he would lead a march to the Kremlin. Navalny has also called for a permanent encampment of “Occupy” demonstrators like those seen in New York City and elsewhere.

In other abnormal election news, topless women from the Ukranian feminist group FEMEN [Russian lang.] protested inside the polling location in Moscow where Putin cast his ballot earlier in the day. According to local news reports [Russian lang.], the scantily-clad activists yelled that Putin was a thief and attempted to steal one of the voting boxes before police stepped in.

All the protests happening in Saint Petersburg happen about 100 yards from my house. I am right in the epicenter of Russian political life.
