Dude, that's the problem. You know Russians from Amsterdam, St Petersburg, Moscow. Jmj knows one from Chicago. But what about knowing Russians from the heartland, where the majority of the population is? For them, their economic well being has increased over the last 12 years significantly, so they support Putin. Just like folks in the U.S. midwest and south, these people are easily swayed by propaganda, patriotism, and all the usual political b.s.

The way people react to Putin reminds me to how people outside U.S. reacted to Bush being elected/re-elected. People of the world couldn't understand how Americans could vote for this guy, but if you were in the U.S. and understood the fabric of American politics, you could see why certain segments of the population supported the chimp. It's a matter of perspective that you don't have when you are in Amsterdam, Chicago, etc....

The guy I work with came here from St. Petersburg as an adult and still has family there. He's not from Chicago. He believes that people need to be controlled by government. He's also a racist homophobe that believes he's superior to everyone. I think you'd like him.....JMJ

Exactly. The Putin phenomenon cannot be understood without context, understanding of Russian history, and understanding of the experience of the average Russian person in the last 20 years.
