It's been around a while. I just wasn't seeing a whole lot in our scene so decided to start doing them in 2004. They are big in the pop scene and some are very creative but in the end you are right. It's just mixing. The first dozen or so I did by hand including Voices which came out on Restricted Access. Herb Martin's Soul Drums is essentially a mashup. Here is my latest (shameless):

That's what I thought, too. "Why don't they call it 'two songs at the same time'?" ;)
Oh, I know very well how I got my name

You may be right there. I remember a few shops in the 90's selling bootlegs of the same nature as mash ups, but they were just called bootlegs.

    Mash-up. Mix. Long blend. Etc.

One of the first I ever did was back in 84 or 85....'Our Darkness' - A. Clark & I Feel Love - D. Summer. It was at the very least a 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 minute ride.

If accapellas on top of another song count, then that was the norm in Chicago way back then as well.

Mash Up Came w/Digital. THey were blends before the digital wave. It's a good distinction because different things are going on with a computer created mash up and a four track blend.
