It's hard to believe that Faze Action burst onto the scene as long ago as 1995 with their debut EP Full Motion on the much missed, and still iconic, Nuphonic label. The follow up single In The Trees really put them on the map. This can rightly be called a classic record, with its soaring cello melody and funky driven bass groove, which ended up on a whole host of compilation albums. The internet retailer Juno reissued it as part of their 10th Birthday celebrations with a rather tasty Carl Craig mix added in for good measure.
Faze Action are brothers Simon and Robin Lee, their sound has disco as its foundation but also draws heavily on Latin, jazz, African music, funk and, notably, classical elements. Robin taught himself to play bass guitar, and went on to study music at London's Goldsmith's College. While Robin taught English in Japan in the '90s, Simon worked in various London record shops, indulging his interest in early '80s New York disco.
Faze Action's debut LP, Plans And Designs was highly acclaimed; its uncompromising progressiveness was compared to Talking Heads' art school funk and the electronic disco of Francois Kevorkian and bands such as D-Train and Dinosaur L. The album was distinctive for its use of classical instrumentation such as strings and timpani drums alongside disco and house rhythm sections.
Over the last few years they have been working hard on their own Faze Action Records (FAR) label, through which they released their last album, Stratus Energy, in 2009, which is a piece of pure disco heaven. Taking all the elements of classic '70s disco and re-energising it for today: driving, electronic, disco funk. The label also put out Luke Howard from Horse Meat Disco's Miss Cheesecake single last year too plus some great EPs from The Shack and Andromeda Orchestra . They've also been doing remixes for Joey Negro's Z Records label, Kid Creole on Strut and disco legends Odyssey amongst lots of others.
They are currently hard at work in the studio writing the follow up to Stratus Energy, with a new single due at the end of April - "Freak For Your Love" - showing that they are still at the top of their game. Like Melting Pot, they are obsessed with ensuring that their sound quality is as high as possible, with great care and attention taken when mastering and pressing their 12" vinyl singles. We like them a LOT!
Simon is the DJ of the pair and we can't wait to get him back to Glasgow, it's been five years since his last visit. FAR too long!
