I read a book by Michio Kaku. He said there were 24 dimensions or something. My head exploded.

That didn't pan out. There was one type of string theory that used 24 dimensions, but the mathematics couldn't support it. In fact, no currently accepted string theory (of which there are many variations) can support more than 11 dimensions without breaking down.
But eleven dimensions should be just about as mind-blowing as twenty-four. Especially since 90% of humans can't digest more than three dimensions (even in our four dimensional world consisting of three spatial dimensions and one temporal dimension).
