Sure there is, it's called income level. Poor people can't afford to buy 10 soft drinks, but they can afford to buy one extra large. This is Bloomberg saying, "You dumb poor people can't control yourselves, so I'm going to act like your daddy".

And you're in favor of this. Tell me again how you like Ron Paul.

Junk food shit is cheaper than everything healthy, or maybe you'll have to cook everything. I was shocked when I saw those hamburgers menus at 2.5$ in San Francisco last summer!

This law places no limits on how much soda one can drink.

The city spends $4 billion a year on medical care for overweight people, he said.

The $4 billion comes out of communal taxes, or where does it come from?

It restricts the amount that can be sold. 64oz cups for soda are now banned. Have to buy two 32oz sodas now. That costs money, so in effect in DOES restrict the amount of soda one can drink. Again, this is punitive to the poor. Kind of surprised you seem unable to grasp this.

Let's not forget this doesn't effect places like Starbucks were those that aren't poor can purchase drinks with over 1000 calories.

Not at all. I was just ready to read a lot of agreement in here which isn't much of a conversation. The study Bloomberg talks about is interesting. I don't really know what to think about this thing yet. Don't think it's anything akin to totalitarianism though and isn't any slippery slope

Really? The Executive makes a decree that certain size sodas can no longer be sold at certain locations under the false guise of public health, and it's not a slippery slope? Do tell.

    Ron Paul!!!
This is for fountain drinks only. Restaurants can price refills however they want. No need for a price difference. Also, obesity is far more punitive than the increased price of buying 2 32oz sodas. (And Jesus Christ, NOBODY should be drinking that much soda anyway!)

The choice to me is this:

Empower government - in a democracy, this is a gov by and for the people. And in this instance, it is working to promote public welfare - gov's greatest purpose.

Empower corporations - soda companies have spent billions brainwashing demand for poison into our minds. They have spent unlimited resources on the science behind biologically manipulating our reward centers with chemicals that are killing us.

I go with gov working for the public good instead of corps interested in profits, not public health.

P.S. You obviously totally missed the point of my Ron Paul posts. RIF

Sometimes too much freedom can be more controlling by virtue of its ability to allow irresponsible adults to lose control by slow suicide including poisoning their children with 64oz sodas instead of perhaps a 10 oz and some water.

Drinking sugary beverages does not quench thirst. It actually increases it. So like the crackhead who cant wait for the next fix, people who consume copious amounts of soda need more to satisfy the addictive
    properties of sugar.

Sometimes folks have to be babied.

Nah, I didn't miss a thing about you and Ron Paul. Thanks for playing, though.

You talk about empowerment goverment by the people. This isn't an example of it. It's a fiat by a self righteous billionaire. The fact that you don't get that actually kind of surprises me.

"(And Jesus Christ, NOBODY should be drinking that much soda anyway!)"

Like I said, you'll be demanding that people limit the slices of cheese on a chesseburger. Not everyone who drinks a large soda is obese. Maybe you are, but I'm not. Why should my decisions be limited due to your inability to control yourself?

It's laughable that you're trying to assert that this will have any effect on coporate profits when you, yourself, point out that ban only effects restaurant fountain drinks. So what is this really about? It's about Bloomberg trying to substititue his judgement for his constituents without asking them what they want.

    That's lame.

What if it's a hot day, and a little tiny mini water bottle doesn't do it for me?

What will they do when I pass out?

    :(
Oh, I know very well how I got my name

It's not a ban on anything big sized just junk like soda, which would just dehydrate you on a hot day anyway.

So refill on sodas but not water which is readily available via a water fountain, sink, convenience store?

Soda is a diuretic. It increases thirst which on a hot day can actually
increase heat exhaustion. So if you pass out it won't be from not drinking enough h20, it would probably result from laziness to seek out h20 in favor of the big gulp.

A mayor democratically elected (3 times!) by the citizens of this city who, whether you agree with this proposal or not, is undoubtedly fighting this cause for the welfare of the people... unlike the unelected, profit-motivated marketing teams and scientists responsible for the poisons now ruing the lives of millions of kids [disproportionately at lower income levels], whose resulting and avoidable healthcare bills I will have to pick up through my taxes.

If you think an "ability to control yourself" has anything to do with this... then you are so far behind in the science on this topic that your opinions are pretty dated.

Again - this proposal does not LIMIT anything - a fact you continue to ignore. Unlike the very real limits on what kind of seat toddlers need to sit on in a car, the number of particles of numerous substances that also potentially have serious effects on health per million units, and the myriad other public health laws that place much heavier restrictions on producers and consumers that nobody seems to be moaning about. Indeed, arguments against helmet, raw milk, and fluoride in water - while also ridiculous - have much stronger legs to stand on than this one, which doesn't limit, ban or even tax a known harm to public health.

I never said that this will effect profits. I'm just pointing out that we can either side with a democratic government (supported by pretty much every governmental and non-governmental health organization that could be bothered to comment), which is motivated by promoting public welfare.

Or we could support unconstrained access to an addictive poison that is ruthlessly formulated and marketed solely to make profits, with absolutely zero care given to public welfare.

    I choose the former.

That's how government works. You obviously have some sort of overarching problem with Bloomy, which is fine... but that doesn't change the fact that this policy would probably make the citizens of NYC some small fraction of a degree healthier, happier, richer and longer lived in the long run. That doesn't sound lame to me. It sounds like good public policy making.

Should go further. Cut sugar content by 25% in all sodas shipped to NYC. Kind of like Utah does with the 2% ABV on beer.

Cheese comes from Milk, US Milk is banned in Europe, due to bovine growth hormones.

IMHO, in the big scheme of things, Soda pop is the least of our worries (he states on page 2 of epic thread about piss buckets).
