DJ MAG – We know a lot about NYC as a musical melting pot, especially in the ’60s and ’70s: Is it still the case?

"ranting old man" DOUG: NYC is still a melting pot; I mean you can practically find a party (or a lounge) for ANY music you’re into on any given day. As Matt said, there are still good parties and events in NYC. But, nightlife has changed dramatically, stemming from the Guiliani administration in the 1990’s. He “cleaned up NYC” to make it the new Disneyland destination, in order to boost tourism. That continued straight into the current Bloomberg “re-zoning laws” for profit administration. 2 decades of sky rocketing real estate prices, bloated Wall Street profits and new developments pushed the middle-class out into the boroughs and in came the wealthy foreigners and transplants seeking a piece of the new Big Apple & the “Sex in the City” lifestyle. Gone are the seedy, underground, after hours, sweat box, warehouse and clubs of yester-year that made New York City the club capital of the World. Kids nowadays have to conform to hotel & restaurant lounges with fancy swimming pools and hi-priced drinks. They think that is NYC nightlife.

Where does someone who feels like an outcast in society go to feel like he/she belongs now? Starbucks or The lounge at the Marriott hotel?
