Beach Party Music Should Be Festive

ok, first let me say this. I love Preston and his Sandcastles party. And I love TOT and everything he does for our community. But I did NOT enjoy the music on the boardwalk on Saturday. To me the music was just too damn dark and moody for a beach party. I didn't get there until 6:00 and it ended at 8, so I can't speak on what was played prior to 6. But you would think the end of the party would be the best, right? Most festive thing I heard was "Sea Lion." I mean you look around at the sun, sea and sand and you feel all festive to be out and about, and then the music is all dark and moody and shit. Or maybe it's just me. Was thinking about doing the Atlantic City trip, but now I don't know.

I agree with music being played at any outside event should be festive but in this case TOT and Preston are both professionals when reading crowds. Was the crowd there more of the deeper moody kind or did you think they also would've liked more festive music?

IMO and my suggestion is to give them another shot at it and I'm sure they will deliver. I'm also confident that both TOT and Preston will up their game when they read not only your opinion but others that attended this event.

Crowds at Coney Island have to be seen to be believed. And that's all I'm going to say about THAT! lol

I can't speak for what was played at the party since I wasn't there but deep and moody is the current direction of the music. Whether it was appropriate at that time during the party, I really don't know.

Speaking of Sandcastles will there be an event after the Mermaid Parade this year?

I didn't play this year but I do know that it was cloudy until about the last two or three hours. That may have something to do with the mood.

I've been on quite a few occasions and every time the music was hot ! I heard alot of Dirty 30s tracks played. It was what that particular crowd seem to want to hear.Everyone was dancing and having a great time.Sometimes we as music programmers go with the mood, weather or attendance. Those on the floor sometimes dictate where we should go with the music. In this case you wanted to dance and party and fuck the moody deep shit LOL.

Can I ask you . which tracks would've you like to hear and or what is your definition of "festive" music? I ask only because I love down tempo house music and it don't matter where the event is held at but at the same I enjoy it even more when it shifts from down tempo to deep house then up to that "pump your fist in the air" type music to make me sweat.I just hope you continue to support us music programmers and events. We need you !!!

Honestly, maybe it was just me. Well, me and the people I came with. They felt the same way. We were in a very festive mood. It was our first time out and about for a summer event this year, and we were really in the mood for some festive music and thought a beach party would be just that. As for the "crowds at Coney Island," I think some of them will dance to ANYthing. Just my opinion, but again, must be seen to be believed. The "characters" always seem to be out in FULL FORCE and FULL out of their minds at CI.

As for what I would have liked to hear, it really was more about the mood of the music, not the particular tracks. I probably would have loved all of it had it been the dead of winter, and I was sitting at home blazed out of my mind and eating bon-bons. No way anything I heard could have been described as festive or something I care to hear out and about at a beach party.

As for me coming out to support, no need to worry about that. I do as much as I can. Music is my life.

Yes, Rican will be out there. He has a float out there as well. Preston announced that his next date will be on July 8th. Unfortunately, I've heard through the grapevine that that will be Soul Summit's first of two dates in Fort Greene park.

I brought my 20 year old cousin out there for his very first time and he had a BLAST! I think that it was a pretty cool vibe out there although it didn't appear that too many DHP members came out.

Only 2 dates? What is the other rumored date?

August 19th. The Parks dept. has decided to only give out 2 dates to any group who wants to party out there. Mikki Aflick's probably taking a couple of dates out there again as well as a few other people..

There I go confusing deep house with soulful house. I tend to do that a lot.

And nice to see criticism can be given and people act like adults. Timmy is always a gentleman and a professional, IMO. Timmy, you do know I was not trying to be mean-spirited or hateful. I hesitated to even write this, and I waited until I was "Monday morning sober" to do it. But since I wasn't the only person who felt this way, I thought I'd pass along the thoughts...

The topic is still in its early stage...hahahaha

Anyways, Eddie has a valid point. When you are doing an outdoor event in the summer time, make the mood upbeat, no matter what your mode or day is dealing you.

What if the crowd ain't feeling the music, carry on regardless or play for crowd?

I only ask this because recently, well not so recently, i've noticed a whole lot Dj's who are playing a set the the crowd ain't feeling and they don't bother to change things.

Now is this arrogance or a lack of one of the skills a Dj needs, the ability to read a crowd?

I doubt this topic is going to get to that epic level. These days it's the variations of the EDM topic that's getting that type of heat (the latest example is the Top 30 richest DJ's list thread).
