The other issue is folks in our scene who selectively give some of these djs passes on this practice.

no, i think it shows more who likes to party and have a good time and who is lame.

if the only time you are listening to music with other people is when you are playing it, your just about money.

which is fine by me, but don't talk no trash about other genres as, "not real music" when you yourself, is not real music... its meant to be shared with others.

This is something I am guilty of but my situation is unique. I do try and go where I can when I can but it is not nearly as often as I would like. DJs should attend other parties particularly ones that play what they enjoy
helps you keep up with the people
lets you hear tracks outside of your computer on a real system
facillitates getting drunk and laid

If you aren't coming because you connect with me and like hearing me play, don't bother because you're not going to be adding to the vibe of the party.

More importantly, as a jock, the worst thing I could do is sit around taking roll to figure out who isn't supporting you.

To the point of your question, if you EXPECT people to come support your parties just out of some idea of responsibility to the scene, you have to live up to your own expectations.

I couldn't agree more.I love to support other djs and their events and love to dance.I've even taken a plane ride for the weekend to come to a few of these parties.The thing that gets me is that these same people won't even say thank you or let alone come out and support one of my events unless they are on the bill ect..No need to entertain this as I will not change my practice or change the way I attend other event.All good.

I miss a lot of parties because I'm all ready playing that night. I try to go to things I actually want to go to and not just to politic and "support". That being said I miss things all the time I would like to go hang out at but other gigs or life get in the way.

i think it depends on the size of the scene in your area doesn't it? take london for an example - theres no way i could get round everyone's parties... i would hope they understood if i wanted to go somewhere else once in a while

maybe they dont dance, maybe they like a loud musical environment but are shy to engage with people they dont know. spending countless nights doing lights in a dj booth, i actually enjoy having people hang out in the booth when it gives me a chance to be social.

If your job is going around spinning music all over the place, do you really expect them to go to a club to listen to someone else spin music on their days off. While it would be nice for DJ's to go to other DJ's parties one should not expect that to be the case.
