DJs that never go to others' parties...

is this an accepted characteristic in the industry, DJs that promote their parties but never attend any other DJs' functions? Is it cool for a DJ to expect cats to attend her/his function without being obligated to reciprocate?

The other issue is folks in our scene who selectively give some of these djs passes on this practice.

this. this is why i asked. it seems to be protocol these days. i don't like to see my friends get taken advantage of, though. i mean, like deesko said, don't bother because you are not adding to the vibe of the party. i agree, but i would love to see some of these dj's that are constantly promoting and inviting to "bother" at least a bit.

I'm confused with the linkage between promotion and attendance, and how exactly folks are being taken advantage of

... do you mean the situation where DJ ABC attends DJ XYZ's events, but DJ XYZ doesn't attend DJ ABC's events?

... that happens all the time, but even if so:

dj xyz never attends any other djs' functions. it is not that complicated, really.

if it happens all the time, maybe it is an industry standard. bottom line is that everyone feels some kind of way about it.

no, i think it shows more who likes to party and have a good time and who is lame.

if the only time you are listening to music with other people is when you are playing it, your just about money.

which is fine by me, but don't talk no trash about other genres as, "not real music" when you yourself, is not real music... its meant to be shared with others.

I remember some dude being all shady behind thick red curtains at d.krivit party in NYC. I says to ray," hey I'm scared, what's this guy doing." He goes, "fool, thats Timmy"! (not one 'like' was used in the making of this sentence)

This is something I am guilty of but my situation is unique. I do try and go where I can when I can but it is not nearly as often as I would like. DJs should attend other parties particularly ones that play what they enjoy
helps you keep up with the people
lets you hear tracks outside of your computer on a real system
    facillitates getting drunk and laid

I don't want anyone coming to my party out of sympathy or a sense of "supporting".

If you aren't coming because you connect with me and like hearing me play, don't bother because you're not going to be adding to the vibe of the party.

More importantly, as a jock, the worst thing I could do is sit around taking roll to figure out who isn't supporting you.

To the point of your question, if you EXPECT people to come support your parties just out of some idea of responsibility to the scene, you have to live up to your own expectations.

    Just my opinion...

And good meeting you last night!

This i agree on, another subject i always wanted to make is people (not dj or light guy) who just hang out in the dj booth for like 80% or more of the night, seriously wtf lol.

maybe they dont dance, maybe they like a loud musical environment but are shy to engage with people they dont know. spending countless nights doing lights in a dj booth, i actually enjoy having people hang out in the booth when it gives me a chance to be social.

do paraplegics appreciate music less than professional dancers?

This. I couldn't agree more.I love to support other djs and their events and love to dance.I've even taken a plane ride for the weekend to come to a few of these parties. The thing that gets me is that these same people won't even say thank you or let alone come out and support one of my events unless they are on the bill ect..No need to entertain this as I will not change my practice or change the way I attend other event. All good.

I miss a lot of parties because I'm all ready playing that night. I try to go to things I actually want to go to and not just to politic and "support". That being said I miss things all the time I would like to go hang out at but other gigs or life get in the way.

Ricky, During the 70's and 80's, Alot of hiphop dj's, Mobile Dj's and Dance music dj's attended each-others throwdowns on a regular basis(Though, Cats would not Admit it/LOL), Infact, Francios stated years ago on this very board about a spot Francios was mixing at(TownHill II on Flatbush ave in Brooklyn, During the late 70's to early 80's, Featuring, Larry Levan and Flowers(Grandmaster Flowers), All in the dj booth together in 1981(Larry Levan gave the Plate, 'Heart Beat', By Tanna

Gardner to Francios to run that night in 1981), Ricky, On the low, Hiphop cats like Dj Lee(Treacherous 3), Dj Aj, Jay Jay(Zulu Nation), Marly Marl, Flash(Grandmaster Flash), Devine(Infinity Machine), Understanding(Cipher Sounds), The Disco Twins, Theodore(Fantastic 5), Afrika Islam(Zulu Nation), D-ST(Zulu Nation), Etc, All used to hang at the Garage and numerous other dance music spots in New York during the 70's and 80's, Though, Most of those cats will

Not admit it do to those cats alliances and loyalty to they're scene(Hiphop), Though, Cats like Danny Krivitt used to run with Bam, Jazzy-J, Red Alert at the Roxy(Danny Krivitt used to mix at the Roxy with Jazzy Jay during the early to mid 80's on sunday nites, if i remember correctly) Ricky, It was more universal in New York in regards to dj's frequenting each-others spots during the 70's and 80's(Especially when cats we're getting loose on the dance floors too/LOL).

    Much Respect
