Thanks for the kind words Mike, they are very appreciated!

Strafe (Steve Standard) is a sort of mentor and to this day a very good friend of mine! He is from Fort Greene in the projects... I think Farragut... and still lives in Downtown Brooklyn. He is a very Old School DJ and at one time a contemporary of Maboya I believe. He was a member of IDRC long before I was. I think that he also may have once spinned at The Loft, though I may be mistaken about that. He is one helluva guitarist and musician. I first met him when I was 16 or so when I was trying to play guitar. Later I would hang out at his studio and watch his band The Meugicians play. They were dope as hell! At that time, both Shannon and Tonya Wynne ("Do It Properly") sang back-up for the band. When I started making my own tracks I would play them for Steve and he would give me not so constructive criticism. Then, as my production skills (and equipment) improved he started getting more and more impressed. Finally, when "Jam On It" blew up he later told me that it made him decide to stop fooling around and he made "Set It Off". He only had a TR-606 at the time, so he came to me and borrowed my 808. So the same TR-808 that was on "Jam On It" was also on "Set It Off".

No prob on the questions Mike, I was just busting your chops! I just hope that we're not boring anybody.

This is the shit DHP is all about man, anybody bored by these stories needs to log out and give up their membership.

Good stuff, really cool to read.

Marshall dropped a bunch of gems like this when he first joined too.

So just out of curiousity, how long was Jam On It out before you realized it was a bonafide life changer? Did you know it before it even hit the shelves, or were you completely caught off guard by how well it went over?

What was the weirdest thing to happen to you due strictly to that song blowing up?

    Peace

Killer thread. Welcome to the P. Just an example of how huge ur influence, I was just talking to a classmate while planning our upcoming 20yr class reunion. Now we're from the country- 19 kids in our HS class. Jam On It was one of about three songs she sang as examples of the records she wants me to play. Came out just when I was getting my hands on the 808 in my dad's home studio. Massive influence. Much thanks.

FYI: the other 2 she sang were "Like A Prayer" and "Lean on Me- Club Nouveau"

Thanks Poppa Deesko! You know my original name was Cozmo Disco, maybe we're related!

I knew that "Jam On It" was dope as hell the minute I came up with the bass line, which was the first thing that I did. Made the entire basic track in about 45 minutes, never been able to do that shit before or since! However, I had no clue what a monster it would become until that shit dropped while we were on tour with Cameo and O'Bryan. We were the opening act, and "Jam On Revenge would go over well, but the crowd was really waiting on Cameo. Then that shit dropped on the radio. We were in Baltimore the first time when we dropped that bass line and the crowd WENT FUKKIN NUTS!!! From that point on O'Bryan had a hard time following us. But, yo, I am STILL caught off guard by that jam and it's staying power. It has become 1 of those floor fillers no matter what the setting or the crowd. I am truly blessed!

I can't think of anything weird ever happening to me due to it though. I've been married and faithful to the same chick for all of it. Married to her 31 years and with her since the summer of '79. And, she's in the group and has gone almost everywhere that I've gone. Kind of like a weirdness deterrent, LOL!

I don't think that Walter owned Jus Born, I think he just mixed "Set It Off". I could be wrong though. I don't know if Strafe ran with Maboya, just seem to remember them rocking in Fort Greene at the same time. Could be wrong about that too, as I wasn't there, just info that I remember being relayed to me. Would be dope if I could get Strafe to join up here, but I doubt it. I'll try anyway.

Yeah, Shannon is from Brooklyn. We do shows with her every now and then these days.

As for Tonya Wynne... I helped my once and now again friend Ken Taylor (drummer for The Meugicians) make this song "Hooked On You" even before "Jam On Revenge" was released. They redid it but kept my bass line, chords and even my signature arpeggio sequence. I think even the hook and some of the lyrics are mine as well. Never got a stitch of credit (the story of my life). Tonya wasn't anywhere around when we were writing it. I could say a lot more about Tonya, but I will refrain.

We were mad cool with the other bands we toured or did shows with, Cameo, O'Bryan, RJ's Latest Arrival, The Gap Band... But, that's probably because we were a band like them and played our own instruments live. No tapes, no turntables. I think that most of the bands looked at acts that came out on stage performing to a tape or record as cheating or getting over. I know that I did at first, because I grew up on bands in the '70s. I still feel that way to an extent, even though we now usually perform with just a keyboard and a laptop.

Yeah man, we were an anomaly on tour. Me and my wife, Chilly B and his wife (my 1st cousin) in the group. My wife's sister singing back-up. Our kids on tour with us. A family member along to babysit. Wasn't no groupies anywhere near us!

Them fukkin kids, they were making as much money as we were and they weren't even in the group! All they did was dance and fukk up the wikki wikki lyrics every fukkin show! In 3 years they never got them right ONCE!

    OK, rant over!

Thanks Marshall, I think that I've only seen the show once, and not in a good 25 years! Hopefully it's better than I remember it.

Before we went into Sigma to lay "Teknology" on 24 track in 1985 I recorded it on my 12 track Akai recorder. Well, I have transferred the multis to digital. It is exactly the same as the release (minus edits and effects of course). What I don't have is the drums (I assume any remixer would change them anyway) and the samples, but everything else is there! The "Tek-Nology" voice sample is isolated on the CD so I'll grab that and include it too.

Here is what I am doing. Anybody who contacts me to do a remix I will give the stems to. If I like your remix I will release it in some fashion. The best ones I will include on an official release on CD and digital. The very best perhaps even vinyl. Of course, all remixes will be my property... HOWEVER, as compensation for your hard work I will license the remix back to each remixer to release or sub-license on a 50/50 basis. You only have to notify me as to your usage. Of course, if I release it commercially you can't just give it away, but if I give it away knock yourself out! Message me if you're interested!

BTW, if this is in the wrong section please accept my apologies and move it please. Thanks! :-)

You predicted the future with "Computer Age (Push The Button)" !

I have wanted to remix "Destination Earth" since you did it.
    It's already a DeepHouse Classic !
If you have, You can send me stems for "Destination Earth" and will get it done ;)

Whoa Victor, I'd be thrilled to have a remix by you! It fukkin amazes me the talent that hangs out here! I never released my remix myself either, so I can envision coupling yours with mine in a release.

Here's the thing though, if you want to remix the original Newcleus release stems for that don't exist. I took the 2 track of the original and added the missing vocal, solo and effects for the Destination: Earth album. All of the remixers basically worked just from those. If you would like to work from that just say the word and I will get them to you.

All of the Newcleus masters are "lost", but I believe that most of the tapes from the first album were at Shakedown when they closed. I KNOW that "Automan" was. I asked Arthur about them and he claimed that he was going to check his warehouse or something, but I'm betting he didn't.

However, if what you want to remix is my House remix I then can get the stems to you without a problem. ;)

Let me know bruh, and thank you for the kind words!

Yo, Ran is my fam man! Slept many a night in my living room! We battled in my basement on an occasion or two as well! He couldn't handle our turntables (Technics 1500MKIIs) so he lost, lol! We also had an arm wrestling tournament which is probably the video that you saw. That asshole edited it to show the result at the end where I let him win against me left-handed. I was clowning and yawning while he was straining, lol! What he took out was the MANY times I beat him before that handily with my right! When I complained to him about the edit he uploaded he said "Oh, you want the director's cut!"

    Thanks man, appreciate it!

Hey Mike, nah, I didn't know any of those Philly cats you mentioned. Most of the cats that I worked with from Philly including Ran used to come to Brooklyn to work in my studio. I went to Philly a lot but I didn't really hang or do business there.

The Rap artists I worked with after '92 were mainly Wreck Squad, who never did get anything released, and my cousin King Just.

We hung out at Zanzibar in '85 I think. It was only a few times. It was before they turned the hotel into a shelter or whatever it was that it became. I don't remember who was spinning but I was likely hating on them anyway. I don't remember them being anything spectacular. There goes that battle mentality again!
