    Finishing tracks/arrangement

Though I'd start a thread on a subject thats been bugging me for years. I hardly ever finish any tracks! I make a 2 or 4 bar loop, listen to it over and over, get bored and move on to the next one. I never feel motivated or able to complete a proper arrangement.

Anyone got any tips for breaking out of my 4 bar loop trap or some arrangement advice?

Coming up with a good set of 4 / 8 bar loops that sound good together is only a very small (but probably the most exciting) part of producing a finished track. It may sound rather obvious but the only way to learn how to finish tracks is by throwing yourself in and doing it. Even if you are bored of the loops you are using you still need to persist in order to learn the process. It does get a lot easier and quicker with practice. Btw I think most producers would probably say they are bored of their track by the time its finished.

What you do is use a software sequencer and cut'n'paste your loops to a 5 minute long track. Add variation here and there.

I believe having an end goal for the track will make you finish it. Why are you making the track? If you have a valid reason why I believe you'll finish your projects.

If a record label wants a remix in the next morning trust me you'll finish it at the speed of lightning, just because you have something that is driving you to finish it. Have deadlines for your projects, have a calender and mark all release dates for each project. Even if you want to upload it on soundcloud as a free download, I think that's also a good reason.

Doing it for the love is a good reason but it wont help you finish the project. I mean we all do it for the love, so find a valid reason as to why your making the music !!

Invest some money in the project, trust me you'll finish it in 5 minutes .. But really put money on the project... Anyway, that's just my 2cents.

Here's a quote I loved a while back on another similar forum for the same question:

    this is a stupid problem

if you want to do something you do it, there's no 'ooh why can't I finish this track?' You can't finish it because you're not working on it.

and if you find you're not finishing anything at all, maybe it's because you're working on the wrong things.

either way, you don't create things by asking why you haven't finished creating something. You do it by creating something. so get to work.
