Duran Duran + Steve Aoki, ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’

Every time I sell a bottle of Cristal, a duppy bat kicks a bedroom DJ in the head.

DJ Steve Aoki and Duran Duran Unfold Music History at Trident's See What Unfolds Live

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/dj-ste...183200507.html

NEW YORK, June 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- History was made last night at Terminal 5 in New York City, when Trident Gum, the brand known for sparking fun into everyday life, turned an average Wednesday night on its head with its "See What Unfolds Live" event.

Approximately 3,000 lucky fans were treated to an evening of unexpected surprises thanks to world renowned DJ Steve Aoki, who hosted an unforgettable performance that included an appearance by legendary pop superstars Duran Duran. The defining moment of the night was a Steve Aoki produced remixed performance of the band's classic hit, Hungry Like The Wolf, aptly named, "Hungry Like The Wolf: Steve Aoki vs. Duran Duran - The New York Werewolf Mix" that brought the house down. The remix was the joint vision of electronic dance music master DJ Steve Aoki, and Duran Duran, who collaborated for weeks on the reinvention of the song.

"As a brand, Trident has enjoyed many milestones throughout its history and tonight was another first for us,"' said Stephanie Wilkes, Vice President, Confections, Kraft Foods. "See What Unfolds Live allowed us to bring our personality as the brand known for liberating fun to life through the lens of Electronic Dance Music, a passion point for our enthusiasts, and the talents of DJ Steve Aoki. The surprise of Duran Duran was the spark that made the night truly unforgettable."

Hungry Like The Wolf: Steve Aoki v.s Duran Duran - The New York Werewolf Mix is available for free download on Trident's Facebook page (facebook.com/TridentGum) to concertgoers with a special code and the general public - up to 30,000 downloads. An official video of the collaboration, complete with live footage from the performance set to the studio track, will premiere on Vevo.com on June 29.

"We could not pass up the opportunity to work with Steve Aoki on a remix of one of our songs. It's always really exciting to collaborate with someone whose work you admire, especially when what you are creating together is something that ultimately you're going to perform live. Unlike so many remixes, where a DJ takes just a few elements from the original to create a new track, the challenge for Steve and all of us was to come up with something that every member of the band was well represented on, and that could be performed live on stage for the fans," said Simon LeBon, lead singer Duran Duran. "This event is the beginning of a really exciting summer for us including tours in both the States and Europe, where we end up with a concert back home in Hyde Park for the opening of the Summer Games."

Trident will also be helping consumers "say yes to fun" all summer long beginning with a music video competition on Genero.tv. Directors from the Genero.tv network can get in on the fun by downloading the remix along with video assets from the show to create their own video rendition of Hungry Like The Wolf: Steve Aoki vs. Duran Duran - The New York Werewolf Mix. Trident fans will have the opportunity to view and vote on their favorites - winners will debut on July 27. In the interim, the Trident See What Unfolds Live road show will make stops across the country, liberating fun in major markets from Boston to LA and Seattle to Miami.

"I am always looking for new projects and opportunities that allow me to push my limits and surprise my fans- the chance to remix Hungry Like The Wolf has been a lot of fun and Duran Duran and Trident have been great partners," said DJ Steve Aoki. "Hungry Like The Wolf is such a classic hit, I was thrilled to remix it and now we're handing it to the fans to bring it to the next level with the video competition. I can't wait to see how it turns out!"
Photos and b-roll available upon request. For more information, to learn how to download the remix, or to see if the Trident See What Unfolds Live road show will be coming to your city, go to Facebook.com/TridentGum.

Sorry, but in the absence of a named source in your opening post is does read like that is your opinion (i.e. DD being perhaps the greatest rock-n-roll band still playing). Which I'd be quick to dispute on the basis of everyone from the Stones and AC/DC to U2 and Metallica having filled stadiums and festivals in the 20+ odd years that DD have been rather low key. I mean......they're not even really a rock band in a classic sense...

I said the last 20+ years were low key, not the London Olympics. Duran Duran have not been relevant since Notorius in '86. There's a whole generation of grownups that does not really know who they are (considering that they used to be globally huge). Maybe they will now, with the new.....business model.

BTW, what is it with you and the DJs? You keep shooting arrows in that direction, what's that all about?

I'm from the city that spawned them, and hungry like the wolf and rio are shit IMHO.

Alot of their success in America had a lot to do with the fact they had videos to go when MTV first started.

Really happy to see Simon, Nick and the rest of them getting back into action.

But I would love for someone to point out to me what those 'dance roots' were... I mean, they're great lads, made a ton of fine pop songs (along with star producer Alex Sadkin, R.I.P.) and fabulous videos that helped define the MTV generation. Some those songs even got some play at commercial clubs in their day, none of that is in question but from the outset I never remember them being from the 'club world', or explicitly catering to any of it, unless my memory is truly foggy.

Forgive me for saying so, but that 'return to their dance roots' sounds like the typical PR-bot marketing doublespeak I hear so much of everywhere indiscriminately branded about (as in: if you keep throwing stuff at the wall, eventually some of it will stick, or a clock gives the right time twice a day)

Regardless as the above could well be subject to personal interpretation, I still think that the part about 'greatest rock band' might require further proof to buttress the claim.

When most of us think of greatest rock band still active today, I'd obviously wager that it'd have to be in the range of U2, Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones, Metallica, AC/DC, Eagles and more (all of whom grossed in the multiple of hundreds of millions of dollars in their recent tours within the past decade - source here)

While we are all understandably passionate and prone to hyperbole with things or groups we particularly love, not sure that this was an analogy that would stand uncontested on any message board, especially one such as this where there are actually music professionals contributing.

It would be like saying that Southern Comfort is the most popular drink for bars and restaurants. It's a fine liquor and one worthy of respect, but can it really claim the mantle of the Johnny Walkers, Dom Perignons and other mega-brands?

Duran Duran started out on the Dance floor. Granted, it was a very pop oriented, commercial dance floor, but people were dancing to them in ALL the pop clubs. This was a world a lot of us here weren't regularly exposed to back in the day, but nonetheless, it existed, as evidenced by the millions of sales by them and other pop dance groups (New Wave) I always personally considered them a dance group and they've always been very passionate about dance music, actively pursuing new dance trends at every opportunity. In fact, when I worked with them in the early 90's, I was surprised by how educated they were about the underground scene. Hell, they knew every DJ/remixer on the scene back then and they even named cats like Mancuso, Siano, Forrest, and Kevorkian *ducks*, as well as cats just hitting the scene like Chandler, Pal Joey, and MAW.

I guarantee they jumped on Aoki and probably approached Guetta/Tiesto/Deadmau5 too, they know their dance music.
