UPD, I was not at Zanzibar the night Chaka Khan was performing in 1983(UPD, I seen Chaka Khan at the Garage in 1983 when, 'Aint Nobody', Had just come out and i was watching the show by the stage area to the right by the big speaker that was close to the steps to the stage and after the performance, Chaka Khan asked me and my man for a joint/LOL)), UPD, I tried to stay away from spots when an artist was performing because that took away my much needed time pushin

Up mad lovely on the young ladies(Plural/LOL) On the dancefloor, At a spot, Though, I've seen my share of Performances at Zanzibar during the early 80's thru early 90's), The only reason why i was present at a Zanzibar when someone was performing is, I did not call Zanzibar's hotline to find out what was going on at Zanzibar the week in advance and i just got caught out there the night of someone performing, Though, I most definitely knew that Tee Scott would bring it mad hard after the

Performance till 7 or 8am sunday morning(UPD, I usually went to Zanzibar on Saturday nites going back to when Hippie Torrales was mixing at Zanzibar in 1979, Though, I went to more than a few Friday nite throwdowns at Zanzibar when Francios was mixing at Zanzibar in 1981 and Larry Patterson from 1982 to the mid 80's, UPD, I never went to Zanzibar on Wednesday nites(Which was Tony Humphries night to rock from 1983 to 1984 or so), Because, I most definitely knew that i

Was not going to work in Manhattan the next morning, My man/LOL), UPD, What time was Zanzibar closing on Wednesay Nights/Thursday Mornings in 1983 and 1984, When Tony Humphries was mixing there, My man.

Wednesday nights was originally Larry Patterson's night Tony took over after Larry left. The club would close between 6 & 7am ever once in awhile it would go later. It's funny that you said Chaka asked your man for a joint because it relates somewhat to the story of the night she came to Zanz. Chaka was lit up nice the night she performed there, she was so nice she couldn't perform all of her songs as evidences of that video.
She was suppose to do all of her hits of that time, but she couldn't do it she was too lit up! I believe by the time she got to the middle of the second song she bailed out & apologize to the crowd. She promise to come back & do it again which of course she didn't. It was somewhat sad to see such a iconic singer so wasted.

UPD, I remember Chaka Khan being a guest on Arsenio Hall's show during the early 90's and Arsenio Hall said something to the effect of Chaka Khan getting zooted before shows, But, Arsenio Hall did it in a very discreet manner, Except for money(Arsneio Hall), Gesturing with his hands touching his nose a few times(That maybe

Alot of cats in the audience at Arsenio Hall's show did not pick up on, But, Those who have seen Chaka Khan perform live, Most definitely know the time in regards to Chaka Khan liftin the pipe, My man/LOL, UPD, Was Vesta Williams one of Chaka Khans background singers when Chaka Khan performed at Zanzibar in 1983, My man(Vesta Williams was down with Chaka Khan when Chaka Khan performed at the Garage in 1983, My man).

UDP I was at zanz the night Chaka performed and i remember her complaining about her voice and apologizing promising to come back another time. I also remember her mentioning she had just performed at the garage the night before and that was the reason her voice was cracked.

UDP, Mike were you at zanz when patti Austin performed and got booed? That must have been a very embarrassing moment for patti austin to get booed on the Zanzibar stage.

Also were you at the garage when whitney houston (rip) performed? I was not there that night but legend has it that ms Whitney received the same fate at the garage as patti Austin. Perhaps some og's can verify this tale.

UPD, Good lookin in regards to pointing out Vesta Williams in the video clip, My man, Tad, I was not at Zanzibar the night Patti Austin was boo'ed off the stage, My man(Patti Austin must have come mad weak to receive that type of treatment, My man), Tad, I was not at the Garage the night Whitney Houston performed At the Garage either, Though, The two best performances that i've seen at the Garage was The Colonel in 1986 and Cheryl Lynn in 1984 and the best

Performance that i've seen at Zanzibar was Ten City in 1990, Though, One of the all-time best performances that i've ever seen in a spot, Was Curtis Hairston perform at Club 88 in 1987, Tad, UPD, The crowd at 88 was very dis-respectful to Curtis Hairston that night(At least to me), Because, Money(Curtis Hairston), Gave his all and the crowd at 88 we're acting like Curtis Hairston was not worth the time to listen and appreciate a true artist who can most definitely sing in a

Live setting with no excuses for his erformance not being top form, My man, Tad, When Curtis Hairston was hitting those very high notes on the plate, 'Shining Star', I would have payed 50 dollars a piece to get into 88 and i came with 3 young ladies that night(So, If i knew in advance that Curtis Hairston was performing at 88 that night in 1987, I would have payed $200 dollars to get into 88 if cats we're charging that amount, My man), Tad, Curtis Hairton performed one of my favorite plates, 'Summertime', From 1986, Produced by Leroy Burgess, My man.

UPD, Tad, Do you cats remember a cat by the name of Lamont Boles(Mad short Lightskinned cat, About 5'3 in height with a full beard, Who used to host the live shows at Zanzibar during the early to mid 80's, Along with Shelton Hayes and Carolyn Byrd), UPD, Tad, Lamont Boles used to host live shows at Zanzibar, Club

America and Club 88 during the 80's, Also, I would like to add another one of the best live shows that i've ever seen in a spot, Was Barbara Roy(Estacy,Passion and Pain), Perform at Club America in 1986 when her plates, 'Gonna put up a fight', And, 'Gotta see you tonight', Had just come out via the production of Paul Simpson.

No I was not there that night but i did hear about that. As far as Whitney I was there for that neither but I do know back then she was just making the transition of coming out the modeling world to becoming a singer. So my point is I'm sure she was nowhere near as polish of a singer that she became known for today. Mike Club 88 wasn't my cup of tea crowd just didn't do it for me they seem to be disrespectful to a lot of artist there. I remember going one night and Ed Lover was performing he busted on a cat in the audience & the cat along with a couple of his boys charged the stage to give him a beat-down. They got him out of there fast but the fighting continued out in the streets in front of the spot. I never went back after that as a patron, I did go back many years later as a dj for a very very short period. Billy Pres moved me up there from Zanz to make a statement as some sort of punishment, lol.

Burton) and Kevin O(Kevin Oliphant), Used to put in much work at Club 88 during the mid 80's to the mid 90's, My man, UPD, The night i seen Curtis Hairston perform was the first time i had ever been to a spot in New Jersey, We're cats in the spot did not appreciate the music of a live artist who could truely sing with his in regards to Curtis Hairston(UPD, I felt sorry for Curtus Hairston that night at 88, Because New Jersey never came weak like that in regards to not supporting a well-

Known artist such as Curtis Hairston, Though, Dj Burt quickly made me forget the lack of support that the crowd at Club 88 showed Curtis Hairston that night, My man/LOL, UPD, Is Gerald T(Gerald T.Roney), Still in New Jersey these days, and whatever happened to Club 88(Is it still standing these days on Evergreen Place in East Orange,New Jersey, My man/LOL).

There was a spot in E.O. called Magoos that was happening on Sunday's Barry was the resident there that's where I got turned on to him. Never caught him @ Cosmos. As for Club America when it originally opened Marlin Bob, & Timmy Regisford where the resident & they were marketing the club as a high end spot however that didn't last long. After that there were a number of dj's in & out of there. I know somewhere around 90 the club settle with Johnny Dangerous as the resident dj & Kerri Chandler was the light man lol. I know Kerri is a member here so maybe he can add to that, Johnny produced a cut called "Beat that Bitch" things started taking off for him & he bounced. After that the club had a contract with WBLS, in came John Robinson taking over the Friday nights & the added me on as his opener. We were there until the club closed around 94. Mike I live in DC now so I haven't seen Lamont in a good while but we are connected on FB.

UPD, Merlin Bob was mixing at Club America the night Barbara Roy was performing during the summer of 1986, My man(UPD, Club America used to close at 6:00am on Sunday Mornings, Which besides, Zanzibar closing around 7am to 9am and sometimes at 10am on occassions(If cats souped Tee Scott to go for a few more hours, My man/LOL), On Sunday mornings was a rarity in New Jersey during the 80's and 90's, My man/LOL, UPD, What time did Sensations in Newark,New Jersey

Close(I never been there before, My man), UPD, Merlin Bobb used to go to New York Tech in Manhattan(By Columbus Circle and 60thst on the Westside), UPD, One of my boys used to go to New York Tech in Manhattan during the late 70's to early 80's and i used to go to a few Throwdowns at New York Tech during the late 70's to early 80's and Merlin Bobb would be at the throwdowns, UPD, I did not know what Merlin Bobb looked like since i never met money before(My man never met

Merlin Bobb either at New York Tech), Though, One night me and my boys are waiting online to get into Zanzibar and money(Merlin Bobb), Is sitting in a chair asking cats for they're ID's to get into Zanzibar during the early 80's(Around 1982 or so), Yet, When i went to Club America that night in 1986, Merlin Bobb's name was on the flyer and me and my man looked at one-another, Mad laughin that the cat who was going to New York Tech and checking cats ID's to get into Zanzibar was Timmy Regisford's man Merlin Bobb from BLS, My man/LOL.

Magoos was right off of Main street next to East Orange HS. The spot across from Zanz I can't remember the name of it but I do know the place you speak of. Jihad Muhammad was playing there in the later years.

Mic during the games would rock tapes from Club 88 during time-outs and at half-time during the games, My man/LOL, Infact, Vinnie from Naughty by Nature was playing in the tournament for a few games during the mid 90's(Money could play for a cat not into playing on a regular basis, My man/LOL), UPD, Lamont Boles used to play in the backcourt for Grambling University during the mid to late 70's and if i remember correctly, Lamont Boles was working at Zanzibar, Club 88 and Club America at the same time during the 80's too, My man/LOL.
