Introduction of the SBS Designs SP-1 Tube Warming device w/ demo link Avail Sept 2012

I wanted to post pics and some details of my Flagship processor The SBS Designs SP-1 a Vacuum Tube Warming Device

    Introduction to SP-1

The SBS Designs SP-1 (SP-1 = Special Processor #1) is one of the most unique vacuum tube warming devices ever produced, offering flexibility and features that have not been offered before to the Pro Audio & Audiophile market.

The SP-1 is a hand made High Fidelity processor 5 yrs in the making that will let you record and add desired flavor to music in ways never achieved.

Sp-1 was carefully thought out in the original conception and put through years of a prototype testing in different applications. While the opinions and suggestions of numerous individuals who work with audio for a living were considered - all in order to improve this product to make it the most useful vacuum tube warming device available on the market.

The SBS Designs SP-1 will bring a new level of excitement your source material.

    Applications for SP-1

SP-1 was designed for Professional Recording Studios, Home HIFI Audiophiles, The Nightclub pro audio market & the live sound PA Market.

    What is SP-1?

SP-1 is a 1 RU (Rack Unit) Vacuum tube warming device that is user adjustable designed to tailor & Sweeten up the source to your personal taste and to improve the dynamic range on any given sound system or source.

A carefully designed expansion process will bring out exciting detail that is so often masked by recordings that are compressed and engineered to be mono compatible. The SP-1 will also bring back amazing detail to digitally stored / processed recordings which where subject to data reduction processing.

    How does SP-1 work?

SP-1 has a sub bass expander and an extended range of top treble expander. These expanders are top quality fully analog which use no vca's and contain no noise or distortion generators. They add dynamic range by controlling the target frequencies with photo resistors.

Two front panel threshold controls, allow the end user to adjust at what level the low frequency and high frequency expanders begin to increase dynamic range, turning down a control all the way bypasses that expander.

These expanders are subtle and employ control feedback systems to monitor the depth of expansion and prevent obtrusive runaway operation, even if the controls are turned up too high. The low frequency expander has a program dependent release time limit, so it will not add any annoying droning or rolling bass to a source.

The high frequency expander operates relative to the overall spectrum of the music being played, so it will not produce over pronounced highs that sound like someone turned up a treble control too far. These expanders will not create something that is not in the recording. The material must contain low and high frequency information for the processor to work with.

The expansion circuit in turn feeds a two stage zero feedback tube amplifier these tube amplifiers are the same class A types used as gain stages in vintage recording equipment. They are not designed to create tube distortion like a guitar amp, but they will warm the sound by imparting the natural characteristics of the triodes. Part of the reason is that we do not choose exact matched tubes between left and right channels, and the slight natural differences in transfer function between tubes improves the stereo image of an otherwise clinical recording. The warmth of the tube is enhanced by improving the dynamic range of the music ahead of them.

    I/O rear panel

The SP-1 rear panel has a variety of inputs and output choices for the end user.

The SP-1 can be hooked up with the RCA unbalanced inputs and outputs to be used in an unbalanced effects loop or an unbalanced main output of a mixing console. SP-1 can also be used in a home high fidelity sound system for clients that like single ended circuits.

The SP-1 offers XLR Balanced inputs and outputs for mixing consoles, in recording studios and in audiophile sound systems for clients that run fully balanced sound systems.

    I/O rear panel Continued:

The SP-1 offers a HIFI Phono preamp stage designed for phonographs, this feature was offered to the end user in studios for sampling & for audiophiles that want to add a really unique flavoring with tube warming to the source.

The SP-1 offers a Line or Phono level selection switch on the rear panel to adjust for line or Phonograph use.

    Bonus SP-1 Features

The SP-1 offers some amazing unique features to give the audio enthusiast many options to playback and record music offering a signature sound & texture like no other component has offered before.

    SP-1 Reverse Phono curve

The SP-1 provides a reverse RIAA curve output so you may use your favorite phono pre amp with a Line level source, for example CD players, Lap tops, Drum Machines, Keyboards or Live instruments that can run line level for more flavor to the source.

You can also use a phono input on a mixer using the reverse Phono curve and keep a line input free for other sources. SP-1 is the 1st processor of its kind with these features and layout to offer this option.

This the only processor where you may input phono or line sources and output phono and line level at the same time.

Digital can no longer sound cold, & MP3 sounding bad is NOT a issue anymore, the SP-1 and Iso-Q2 by SBS Designs will bring dynamics and flexibility like never before from digital sources.

Here is a mix demo of music thru the SBS DesignsHifi processing

This Demo of SP-1 with the Iso-Q2 has more musical content to show the dynamics of The all new SP-1 to show how the tubes can really add an amazing tone and warmth to the source while bringing out dynamics that usually gets lost or buried.

SP-1 will bring out the little details in the songs that are usually masked from compression in mastering or when compressed to MP3 format that will not sound gimmicky.

Hope you enjoy this demo and what it does with the fidelity of the songs played thru the SP-1 & Iso-Q2

SBS DESIGNS COMPONENTS MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN THE FIDELITY OF MUSIC IN COMPARISON TO MUSIC PLAYED ON THIS LISTENERS SAME SYSTEM WITHOUT SBS DESIGNS COMPONENTS USED ON A FILE.

Listener feedback from the SBS Designs SP-1 & Iso-Q2 audio demo mix on HIS home sound system.

I played this from the Soundcloud App on my tablet, docked on my cradle connected to my Pioneer AVS receiver with a pair of towers and a pair of satellites.

It made my low cost audio system sound totally different, I heard every note damn near without even cranking the volume, no exaggeration. Then I went and played other audio(mp3's) DJ mix sets podcast. And none came close in sound reproduction in comparison to what SBS Designs is capable of. SP-1 with the Iso-Q2 is the Global Standard for sound Reproduction.

even at low levels, I can feel and hear the depth and separation. There's no need to make any tonal adjustment I hear it all, vocal, drums, hand clap, excellent work. OUTSTANDING!!!!!

    James M Henry

When asked about how he liked the bass response of the SP-1 & Iso-Q2 here was James Reply.

Sbs Shorty - how did you like the bass response?

    James M Henry
I had to go back and play the demo again, Pioneer's AVS receiver has adjustable lowpass crossover 200>100>80>50HZ respectively. The towers having (2) 6.5inch woofers they performed better at 80HZ. With that being said. SP-1 Tube Device repr
oduced a bass response that gave me memories of walking to Club Zanzabar, you can be a block away and you felt the bass in the pavement coming up through your feet to your soul. And as you gotten closer and closer to the door the feeling of the bass became stronger and not louder, you get that sharp solid thump with depth and clarity.

    Some more on SP-1

With the SP-1 there is ALOT going on in this processor to help improve the dynamics in any source and sound system used, studio, home hifi, club or Live PA, it is VERY complex & never been done before. What is really nice about the SP-1 is, how it offers a really unique sonic flavor and bring out dynamics in a production and system that is a necessary tool for sound and recordings.

    On circuit board:
    - There are over 450 individual components that go into the unit
    - 1200 individual solder points
    - about 880 traces in total

What the front panel threhold pots do is adjust at what level the high and low frequency expanders trigger. The high and low frequencies are separated, expanded then mixed back together and then sent to the tube output buffers.

Whatever the tube does is a product of the level you choose to set on BOTH front panel knobs in tandem with the level of music going into the unit.

You can calibrate the tubes for the amount of effect and gain structure internally. The SP-1 was designed with internal calibration for variable Tube modes that are set from the factory to be application dependent. These tube modes are for the home hifi audiophiles & the pro audio market.

These calibration tools include the rear panel Input gain separate from the internal output gain pots to get proper gain structure in any situation from the studio to live PA to club PA, to Home hifi.

The Low & High Threshold effect calibration pots can be field adjustable to set the sensitivity of the Low & High threshold attack for the pot rotation to user preference.

This feature was designed into SP-1 with speaker systems varying on how audible the factory settings are and can easily be adjusted to suit your preference for any system of any size and caliber.

With the digital MP3 media war we are fighting today to improve the sound quality used in MP3 format the SP-1 is the answer. You can improve the fidelity of a MP3 or any quality source from vinyl to WAV to AIFF to FLAC with SP-1 utilizing the Low & High Frequency Threshold pots to enhance Dynamics to the source. The internal phono stage works amazing with old vinyl to unleash dynamics in this source as well.

The Low Frequency & High Frequency Threshold adjustment pots on the front panel of SP-1 can be used to add more weight, detail, air and extension to thin edgy sounding recordings and give your source personality and fidelity that will take your listening experience to the next level on any sound system or on any studio recording.

When we designed the SP-1 we did want to design a processor that will add an effect to a source just for the sake of adding effect like most processors will do just to hear something always going on, all tube processors or any processor will effect a source no matter if its well mixed or needs help or not & you always hear an effect. This is not what was intended with SP-1, well mixed program material played thru The SP-1 will remain completely neutral & do nothing to the source.

Where SP-1 will stand out and shine from the rest & what makes SP-1 such a Special Processor and makes it really come to life is with layered recordings. Strings, Brass, Vocals and so on...

A carefully designed expansion process will bring out exciting detail that is so often masked by recordings that are compressed and engineered to be mono compatible. The SP-1 will also bring back amazing detail to digitally stored / processed recordings which where subject to data reduction processing.

It really is a Special Processor & 1st of its kind. The reverse Phono feat is amazing running cd or software programs like Tracktor & Serato and so on thru a phono stage which will REALLY help audio out with the 2 front panel controls, it really is Total Innovation with the all new SP-1.

I had to Trash the design from the 1st incarnation 5 yrs ago as i wasent really happy with it and start all over again fresh.

Here is a demo with MP3 files mixed from CD Thru SP-1 & Iso-Q2 on my all new Home hifi design, The Annabella Audio A4H Loudspeakers

    http://soundcloud.com/sbs-designs/th...s-designs-sp-1

There are some amazing listener comments on SP-1 & Iso-Q2 fidelity on the demo.

    SBS Designs SP-1 Specs

    Cielo tech on SP-1

    Daniel Neumann
Heard the SP-1 last night at Cielo and I have to say, it was the biggest subtle difference I've heard in a while! It really seems to be built towards honest high-quality signal improvement, not for the "wow-effect" that gets imposed over everything for the effects' sake. (..wish you'd have left it there

How is that different than a BBE Sonic Maximizer and an Aphex Aural Exiter?

    Well SP-1 is

a vacuum tube processor which allows you to choose your desired warmth and improved dynamics of the tubes, the other 2 units mentioned are solid state. But what makes SP-1 so special is, it knows when to quit, if a source is mixed well it does nothing, with the other units mentioned its always there and with a well mixed song you dont want to hear anything add on to it to take away from the composition.

SP-1 will bring out detail lost from low sample rates, so MP3 will improve low resolution recordings as well.

With the digital media war we are fighting today to improve the sound quality used in MP3, WAV, AIFF or FLAC formats the SP-1 is the answer. You can improve the fidelity of a MP3 or any quality source from vinyl with SP-1 utilizing the Low & High Frequency Threshold pots to enhance Dynamics to the source. The SP-1 offers a reverse RIAA phono curve feature.

This feature allows you to run line level sources thru a phono stage for improved dynamics to get line level sources, digitally or Analog mixed closer to the sound of vinyl. The reverse phono curve will allow you to patch any line level source in a phono stage on a mixer.

This feature will come in handy in pro applications if all the lines are used up on the mixer & you can then insert this source in the phono stage in seconds without any disconnecting any cables.

These carefully chosen features and our circuit layout allows you to take your sound quality to exceed greater levels with real user features to enhance the experience.

SP-1 you can also come in phono & out phono running turntables thru SP-1 rt into a mixer phono stage.

    Mono sum feat

You can also sum stereo to mono thru SP-1 for unique ways of mixing instruments in songs in a studio app.

So its a totally different kind of processor that is 1 of a kind

The use of the word pots reminds me of my Grandfather who had stake in a small AM station with vacuum tube am transmitter. Large rotary knobs on the console were called pots. A one armed disc jockey cued up a 45" record with only seconds left in a commercial while having a converstaion and it played on cue.

I thought of the SP-1 concept 5 yrs ago to improve my home hifi system when i was listening to music.

I knew for what i wanted & needed this processor to do it wld be expensive and said the market might not support a processor of this kind that i was thinking of doing, but said let me just make this for myself and some audiophiles that might want this ill build a few if the orders are there, if not who cares im just doing this for myself anyway lol, it was never intended to be offered to the masses, i just didnt think i wld get the support for such a processor for any application.

One day i been playing music on my old home ref system listening to WAV AIFF & MP3. i was some what satisfied to a very small degree with WAV and AIFF but hated MP3. I thought the clarity and realism of AIFF and WAV was ok but still was bothered by the hard edgy hashy/fuzzy sterile tone of how all these digital formats sounded, just seemed to be a fuzzy tone that cluttered up all these files, yes one was cleaner then the next but one was also more clinical then the next as well and fatuiging on the ear, there was just no getting around that I need a special piece of outboard gear that wld help this out. I said there has got to be a way to improve this.

At that time i had already been using some Tube gear from my earlier designs but said its just not enough passing audio thru a tube stage with no real control and that`s it, it still had a hard and restrictive sound characteristic in the music. So i said i need more control of the tubes but i don`t want that tube crunch like guitar amps that add distortion to the music and add more fuzz to music that has a edgy tone. The control of tubes i needed was to have separate control of the top end over the low end, to be subtle but a drastic subtle, if a record had strings and i wanted it to be very sweet or very creamy i wanted the control to bring that out and have the desired control with the amount that i like. If I wanted to add that cushion and air around the notes to soften up the music but have that top end control to bring out top end dynamics, the air and attack of the high hats in a song I wanted this control as well, Tubes can tend to sound rolled off in the top end so this was def needed as an option on the fly. So my processor design had to fill the top end off and bring out the lower end resonance of all the information. I felt this kind of control separate control was needed in this processor because with music variation from song to song some needs help in the low end but top end is ok and vice versa.

i felt the there was no real separation anymore in the music and no sense of air and dimensionality either in the music, the imaging seemed lost. When i wld sit down to listen to alot of the music, yes i sit down and listen to this music we all love, that`s the audiophile in me lol. But I cld listen to an old dance record and get a sense of the artist being on stage performing rt there, can see where the musicians and singers are on stage performing, but with the new music it all seemed panned up the middle almost mono, no imaging no staging just all seemed mono, no separation i lost this experience with new music mixed today.

So i knew SP-1 had to be more than a tube processor to warm up music and thats all, it had to pull out the masked information and expand the range of the music that is getting compressed in mastering & bring out detail lost from low sample rates thats lost in the music or just trapped, it had to bring out & improve the separation.

So i did a 1st version of SP-1 which was 2 rack spaces, and utilized 4 vacuum tubes. The 1st version was ok but not totally satisfied it did not do everything i wanted or mentioned above and was not efficient enough. I wanted a processor to do everything i mentioned but I also did not want this processor to have effect on music that did not need effect if it was well mixed, it had to stay neutral.

3 yrs later an un countable amount hours of investment & after almost bailing on the entire idea saying let me forget about this concept, im just not happy with this at all. I had been listening to more music this time seeing it get some what improved getting excited again and creativity kicking in SP-1 popped back in my head, but I then decided to start all over from scratch fresh same concept but new design and application it needs to be designed for, it has to work amazing in all applications I need to design this with all markets in mind and improve all topologies Analog & Digital media. The target markets for SP-1 had to be The home audiophile market, the pro and home studio market & of course the Pro audio market for nightclubs and live PA for the touring market which need it for these digital line array rigs. I cant just design SP-1 for nightclub markets it will not be worth the time and investment.

With the new design I had to design SP-1 to be more efficient & 1 rack space, SP-1 has to have a drastic impact on the end user with more features. I had to have internal controls to have the capability to adjust the low and high threshold effect of SP-1 to be more or less audible from loudspeaker system to loudspeaker system.

But SP-1 cant just be a line level processor if i want it to work in all these applications, what can i really add to separate it? a Phono preamp stage & a reverse phono curve feat will really make SP-1 interesting, to allow the end user the ability to play vinyl thru the phono stage or cds or computers thru a phono stage to really get me as close as possible to a turntable.

This was how i came up with SP-1 and seems by the way its selling it is EXACTLY what the market needs and has missed having offered.
