Although I like mine straight no vocals, or little, the sista's voice....(all in my camp
say)....is what adds the soul....sorta like the icing on the cake type-sh*t!......

Having to decide between one or the other is no fun...

Actually, if you want, I can let you borrow my soul-o-meter, and the next time you hear a track you can use it to determine exactly how soulful the track REALLY is.

good music is good music.

That is kinda like asking what do you like better:

Filet' Mignon or Ice Cream. Two different flavors I love and can be served during the different times of the whole course of the meal. Peace.

Equal to me, too. Some lyrics takes me away, and some beats break me down.

A track isn't soulful if it doesn't have these words in the lyrics -

Thankyou
Love
God
The
Father
Mother
And

There's lots of others as well.

YOU GOTZ TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

here we go again

I guess "Funkanova" or let's see "Black Mahogany" or let's see "The Nervous Track" or uhhhhhh Loose Change's "Straight from the Heart" or uhhhhh "Wicky Wacky" aren't considered soulful.

I'd suggest you rewrite this thead with the quickness!!!!!

Peace

Lyrics don't inject/remove soul. Elements that combine to make compelling melodies/grooves are the building blocks of soulfulness.

Melting Pot - Booker T. and the MG's = Soulful
You Sure Can't Go to the Moon - C.J. and Co. = Soulful.

there is no telling...soulful music is the shit that moves you from the damn guts. it makes your prostate bubble...makes your uterus churn. It's "it." I feel soul flowing from "spiritual" vocal joints from Kerri Chandler and Blaze for example, I also get it from instrumentals from the likes of e-dancer, nick holder...there is NO NO NO NO telling dammit.

not to be combative at all, but why we always trying to put thangs in boxes and categories? eh?

Humans gain peace from things that they(we) can quantify.

You could no sooner specifcally list what makes soul than you could list what makes happiness or love, for that matter. Boxes suck.

Both are important...it's contrast...but when it comes to making funky soulfull music with machines...trying to add the human element....I'd say it's a lot harder to do without throwing an actual human into the mix...if a track can touch me with just music I find it more powerful than someone singing about touching me with music...

Seriously, IMO I believe that it all matters on what frame of mind you're in at the time. Your present mood may dictate what is "more soulful". Tonight, you may feel that Stephanie Cooke's "Thank You" is the most soulful song you've ever heard but tomorrow when you go to play it...you might be putting it back in it's sleeve, thinkin' "Naw..."
