For a long time I was recording my live sets onto VHS hi-fi (a very inexpensive way of recording long sets, and sounds suprisingly good), but more recently I've been using a Nomad Jukebox 3. It can record to linear digital (wav files) or directly encode to MP3 at a wide variety of bit-rates.

PC and/or CDR.
I havent tried the nomad jukebox yet .. i ve heard lots of good and bad about that product .. i use a DAT recorder minidisc is cool to but its not the same , wow vhs hi-fi thats a new one for me ..
so when you put a live cd out do you convert the tracks to mp3 or just use the wav format ?? i stick with wav better quality mp3 is lossless ..

If I'm just recording the sets for my own use or to maybe give a few discs to friends, I record to MP3 at 256k, the degradation is very subtle using that high a rate.
For more critical use, I'd record directly to a wav file. The Nomad 3 will record up to a three-hour file in wav format, up to 10 hour files in MP3. (The unit actually holds way more than that on its 20-gig hard drive, those are the limits for one continuous file).
The Nomad 3 is a much more "mature" trouble-free product than the earlier version...the old version would only record wav files of 110mb, so you'd end up having to stitch together all the files (often having to iron out glitches at the transition points between files) and it only had a USB 1.1 connection (the newer version has firewire, way more suitable for transfer of large files).
If I'm recording a mix CD to be commercially released, I hook my mixer directly to studio-grade A-to-D convertors and record to a 24-bit file in Pro Tools.

My old pops still record on VHS Hifi. Some VCRs record audio at a hi quality.Originally posted by Mark Andrus:

I've heard rumors of a mod for recording with an iPod, but it may not be true and, like any mod, its at your own risk as it would be a physical reconfig.Originally posted by suenomartino:

Usually I record straight into the PC in WaveLab as a wav file.

It's supported by the hardware. Look out for an upcoming modification that will either allow recording via the iPod's dock or as an add-on. A voice recorder was just introduced.Originally posted by suenomartino:

I used to mix down demos from four-track to VHS tape almost twenty years ago, and they definitely sounded better than if I had recorded to regular cassette or reel-to-reel tape......JMJOriginally posted by Silhouette:

For those who record it straight into the pc, how do you connect your mixer to the pc? I am kinda new to this idea, so I can't figure it out on my own... :(
Use a stereo RCA to 1/8" Y adapter from your "record out" or "main out" on the mixer to the input on your PC's soundcard......JMJOriginally posted by dannyboy:

"I Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda ..." today, is likely the result of saying "F### it" yesterday
if you have a tape-out on your mixer, you can run a line directly from that (2 RCAs -> 1/8" stereo/headphone plug) into your soundcard's line in.

I generally use my MD to record on as it's easier to carry than a laptop, and is pretty compatible with anything. Once recorded, I can transfer to my PC using soundforge, although I have to do this in realtime it can double the time it takes, and then again can take time to convert to MP3 but it all depends on what format I'm wanting the stuff on. At home I generally just record straight to PC. The problem with this is if you don't have a audio specific PC, there may be glitches in the recording - something that won't happen with a MD recording - therefore if it's important, I'd recommend MD first, then PC...

I use total recorder on my PC to record my mixes, I have also tried minidisc but I wasn't too keen on that.
