I am sad to say that I did miserably on this test. Check it out and let me know how you did. Hopefully most of you will fare better than I:

I only got 5 right and I believe most of us won't do much better. It's due to a lack of exposure. All of these groups are vitually non-existent in popular media.

although i was riddled with guilt about guessing the nationality of the asian people pictured, i did actually score a 9.
having a test like that does illustrate a disturbing point about the way we judge people on sight.

\"act your age....not your shoe size\"
I scored seven, but then it is a very difficult test, if I met all these people personally I would score higher...
I wasn't sure what to make of this test, but looking at their site, it seems positive on a whole..
I do know that number 6 and 12 are fine as fine can be!

Dude, relax. I don't see anything wrong with the website nor with what's been said in this thread and I'm Asian myself.

I don't know why people make such a big deal of not being able to tell the the nationality of people of eastern Asian discent. I doubt that many people can tell the difference between people of European discent or people of African discent based solely on appearance alone.

i thought the test was interesting and insightful. i scored a measily 7, which shows me that i definetly need to get myself informed more on Asian people and far eastern culture.
i keep wondering: how do Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamese mothers recognize their sons from the back? B/C if i was walking through Shibuya or Kowloon at lunchhour, I'd be at a loss to tell one person from the next.
works both ways, from what i hear. there's this anecdote (i forget in which context i heard about it), where these three Europeans of different build, height and haircolour were constantly confusing their Chinese Hosts in Shanghai simply because they all had full beards! didnt matter either, that the beards were precisely distinguishable in being fair, dark and red - the Chinese kept mixing up their names and identities repeatedly.
people get confused with my idenity all the time. the most common guesses place me as being Moroccan, Ethiopian, Eritrean, Egyptian and even Turkish (a lot of non-indigenous people here come from these ethnic backgrounds), though i don't have any of the typical features apart from being 'dark'. before i started growing dreadlocks a lot of people had me as an American (a GI no less!) or "Army-bastard" (i.e. spawned out of one of the many and typical black/male/military - white/female/civilian relationships) - funnily enough with dreads people stop mistaking me for an American. and they never consider me to be from the islands.
peace. ngeso.
Can people tell the difference between those people of color who's roots are from the Islands as oppossed to those who's roots are primarily from the United States.Originally posted by ngeso:

Can people tell the difference between people of Indian decent who are from the West Indies as oppossed to those from the East Indies?
What are the differences in looks between Scots, Irish, and English?
What are the differences in looks between peoples born in certain areas of the former Soviet Union.
Can you tell the differences between people born in Angola, Benin, and or Mauritania?
Can you tell the difference between Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Brazillians, Nicaraguans, Angentinians?
This test could apply across the board IMO....
It ain't how much you know, it's what you do with what you do know!
I definitely did not post that link to make fun of anyone or make light of any situation. It is, rather, a way to show us how Asian people do not get sufficient exposure where we live. Thus, it makes it difficult for us, or me anyway, to differentiate between the different cultures. As for having a site ask the difference between Mexican/PR/Cuban, etc., I would actually like to see that. I am sure I would fare much better at it, but what about others? Does that make them racist. Absolutely not! Take it more as an eye opener than as an attempt to put a man down.

Leslie,
the point i was trying to put across is that IMO you can tell these differences to the extent that you study appearances, traits, demeanor, dress, the way people move, act, gesticulate. you can judge a great deal by how reserved or how flamboyant people appear.
i can enter a bar and point out who's from England and who is from the US - even though they're all wearing rugby shirts. it's in the way they wear their baseball caps. look for the difference in haircuts, look how different people greet each other and eat their food. count the number of times they kiss each other and exactly how they embrace. look for the difference in American-worn jeans as opposed to Continental-worn jeans. notice how Italian hand-language differs from that of the French.
the point is: you can tell once you know. if you stick me in a room full of black people, i'll sort out the Americans from the Africans 95% of the time, and i'll tell you whether the Africans come from West- South- or East-Africa.
for me it's a question of how atuned you live to the people within your environment. i think that being atuned is a good thing. and as you can judge by my score, i am not particularly in touch with an 'asian' environment :D . that's why i liked this "test".
peace. ngeso.
BTW i think telling the difference can become crucial in some cases. how? just picture yourself for a moment in some police line-up with 5 other people and somebody about to make a choice. in that instance atunal can be a matter of life and death - yours for instance.
