Funk, Rare Grooves Make Audiences “Slave to the Rhythm”
New Thursday night weekly brings Boogie Down Disco, deep cuts to the forefront

CHICAGO— Vain nightclub and Music 101 invite Chicago to get a fresh fix of funk, disco, Italo and other rare, vinyl gems rarely heard on the local club scene.

Beginning Thursday, July 12, Music 101 promotions present its new, premiere weekly, “Slave to the Rhythm” at Vain nightclub (2354 N. Clybourn Ave). Named in honor of the DJs who continue to cast a nightly vibe of Chicago’s club scene, the night’s name pays homage to the artists who continue to make the music their lives.

True to form, Music 101 launches a night unlike any other in Chicago nightlife. Banking on the Boogie Down Disco sounds sweeping the clubscapes of Germany, France and beyond, “Slave” showcases deep cuts of funk, early disco, Italo and electro funk. The new night is the first club weekly of its kind on the local underground dance scene.

Resident DJs Leonard Part Sixx and Brian Gardner man the main room decks while Kenny Carvajal chills out the first floor lounge with deeper house sounds

“Slave’s” resident DJs each bring a signature sound to the weekly party. Main room resident Leonard Part Sixx boasts a vinyl collection that dates back three decades. An avid record collector since age 12, Sixx’s crates stretch back to the early DJ and disco era, where producers like Walter Gibbons, Francois K and Shep Pettibone commanded the floor. Listen for Sixx to recast the vibe, as he blends more than 20 years of recording and mixing finesse with his seemingly bottomless bins of rare, classic cuts.

Music 101’s Brian Gardner joins Sixx, dropping his own self-styled brand of Boogie Down Disco, Italo and other rare, electronic grooves. A perennial player on Chicago’s club scene, Gardner’s versatility on the decks dates back to his work with the esteemed Soul Foundation Kollective, where he played alongside the likes of Traxx, Jevon Jackson and John BID Simmons, to name a few. Today those influences continue carrying over into his crates in the form of old soul, disco, early house and more.

“Slave’s” soundscape gets a deep house makeover in the first floor lounge, where Chicago production legend Kenny Carvajal brings his influences of jazz, soul and Latin. With tracks licensed by OM records for Mark Farina (including “Rise,” featuring John Redmond) and the continued success of his self-helmed record label Habitat Records, Carvajal’s original deep tracks have charted in the UK, France and Japan. Collaborations with vocalists Reggie Hall, Swaylo and Carla Prather have made this DJ/producer/remixer one of the most sought after artists on the global deep house and electronic scene.

“Slave to the Rhythm” goes off every Thursday, beginning July 12. Music runs from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Vain is a new, multi-sensory experience in Chicago nightlife. The 7,000 square foot space marries the intimacy of a lounge with the energy of a megaclub. Located at 2354 N. Clybourn Ave., Vain is open five nights a week and features live DJs in two separate sound environments.

Complimentary admission for “Slave to the Rhythm” is available before midnight by visiting www.music-101.com.

Vain’s regular hours of operation are Tuesday, Thursday-Friday and Sunday, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturday, 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.; Monday and Wednesday, closed. Standard cover charge is $20 on Friday and Saturday nights; $5 to $10 during the week. For more information, visit www.clubvainchicago.com.
