This is the 2004 BlackBooksCafe.com Soul Series promo mix cd. It is not for sale and for promo use only. This cd has tracks & songs all picked by John Johnson in hopes of creating a cd that describes the essence of blackbookscafe.com and it’s related parties/events. It contains spoken word/poetry that represents the direction of the literature side of blackbookscafe.com. It has Latin rhythms that is supposed to be the backdrop to the bbc’s signature Soul Fiesta themed party. It contains live entertainment and vocals from some local artists. It also contains a percussion & sax filled sound which is the backdrop the Soul Imani and Soul Fiesta parties. So to sum things up, this mix cd is our 2004 description of BlackBooksCafe.com.
How they made the list:……”Poetic Therapy” is a song produced by Balto’s Soul Kats, which is Neal Conway and Aaron Edmondson. It features the very popular Balto spoken word artist Komplex who adds a deep, sensual, male voice to the smooth intro of this cd. The next song “Movement Blues” by Jersey’s Jihad Muhammad was chosen because it contains a deep vibe that is not at all boring with keyboard/piano sound that moves through you body. The story behind the next song in the mix is quite an interesting story, but maybe a blessing in disguise. There was a problem where we had to pull one of the songs from the cd. So we had to quickly find a comparable song to replace the original spoken word/vocal track. After searching and not finding the right song “Jay Rags”(JJ) suggested laying down his own spoken word piece. A Joe Claussell track and a Louie Vega song were selected as possible backdrops to the piece. The “Africa/Brazil” song from Louie Vega’s “Elements of Life” cd was chosen and looped by the cd’s engineer/producer Geoffrey C. So a couple of nights after knowing we had to replace a song, Geoffrey C and “Jay Rags” put together a track called “The Music In Me” that is very nice for all those dancers that like to close their eyes at some point at a party and just feel the vibe. The next track is “Tribute” by Soul Ascendants. This is the first track selected that describes the Soul Fiesta party and begins a 4 song sax filled barrage that moves through the body & mind of House enthusiasts.
The Masters At Work rmx of “La Descarga Del Bobo” continues to build this cd’s height of the Soul Fiesta sound. This was must for the cd and actually halted the start of the cd until it was obtained. DJ Oji’s “Nobody(But the Horns)” continues the flow of the cd with horns infectiously moving through this track. It is a nice intro to the next track which is “Nobody” live @ Soul Imani. This is taken from Una’s very live performance at BlackBooksCafe’s Soul Imani party at Hairs To You in Baltimore, where the artist can actually be heard playing congas too. Keeping in line with the spoken word theme we present “Star Suite” from Mondo Grosso(rmx by Blaze). Next up was Kerri Chandler’s “Ye Yo Ma” which was ridden under one of our co-pics for vocal remixes of the year which is “Love Calls” sung by Kem(Kemistry). The very next song is a spoken word song taken from the undagroundarchives.com House album of the year. It is “The Movement” produced by b-soul(DJ Pope) which features a beautiful Balto spoken word artist(Terressa) laying down some of the most sensuous words in music over the last couple of years. Bringing the cd back to the Latin rhythms is a classic (“Jingo”) song by Candido which is an old school dancer’s favorite. Ending this soul fiesta styled cd is a song called “Colors of the Night” by Balto’s Fertile Ground. This is sung by their lead sing Navasha Daya with a jazzy latin sound that soothes the soul after hearing this very danceable mix cd.
Once again this cd is not for sale. It’s promo only and is our gift to the dancers & people that support our website and the scene as a whole.
