The Latest -
The long-awaited night is upon us. This friday the Lemur hosts the underground legend DJ Spun. I'm personally extra excited because Spun was one of the first Fusion mix tapes I ever acquired and it was/still is hot as shit.
Here's a pretty long bio. I was going to edit and abridge it but it's all great stuff, worthy of reading. So read the whole thing! ... and come out this friday. We're bringin' for you...so bring yourself!!
Records From Rusty Belicek (All Good Funk Alliance) and CorTzu opening up the evening. Noice!!
There will also be a table set up with informatin and registration forms for the Help the Homeless 2003 Walkathon. Any donations are greatly appreciated. For more information check out: http://www.helpthehomelessdc.org/
DJ Spun Bio:
DJ SPUN has been an important figure in the San Francisco and U.S. music scenes since the early 80’s. He started playing with San Francisco bands often sharing the stage with legendary punk bands such as the Dead Kennedy’s, Black Flag, and Social Distortion. And weather he is playing disco, deep house, techno or something completely unexpected his sound is always soulful and feeling with a nod to his punk roots.
In 1987, his growing interest in rap music lead him to focus his energy on DJ’ing. His first DJ gig was playing opening slot at a Kurtis Blow concert in San Jose. From there, he went on to his now legendary Thursday nights at FX the Club. By 1991, the sound had progressed to House and Techno, with the occasional rare groove thrown in. By this time the San Francisco underground scene had started to take off and SPUN was an important part of making this happen. He was a regular fixture at San Francisco’s first underground dance parties; holding residencies at a Rave Called Sharon, the Funky Techno Tribe and The Gathering. As well as playing numerous guest spot’s. At his infamous parties, he played with and hosted some of the worlds greatest DJ’s and producers including Doc Martin, Derrick Carter, Richie Hawtin, Danny Krivit, King Britt, Mark Farina, Harvey, Metro Area, X-Press 2, Ashley Beedle, DJ Sneak, Roy Davis Jr, DJ Dan, Afrikaa Bambaata, the Idjut Boys, and Mad Professor. He has also played with a wide variety of live acts including Dee-Lite, Dub Tribe, The Pharcyde and Ice-T.
In 1994, SPUN felt like it was time to get back in the studio and start producing his own music again. His first release as Central Fire, "This is a Shout Going Out" became a San Francisco break beat classic. He then helped kick-off San Diego’s ever-popular Siesta Music providing them with their first release as well as a follow up. SPUN has also done remix’s for Tim Love-Lee, Drone Muzic and Church Street Recordings. SPUN’s first full-length project is a double LP of quirky disco dubs entitled "Thick as Thieves" produced with Ben Cook for the mighty Idjut Boys label NOID. Look for current releases on London’s Big Bear, MVM, Crack & Speed, Façade, and Filthy Dog Recordings as well as an upcoming release’s on Mandu, and a live project featuring Daniel Wang (Balihu) and Stephen Hall (Arthur Russell, Loose Joints) on Spun’s new label Rong Music. Spun’s tracks have been licensed on too many mix CD’s to mention, most recently his remix of Crack & Speed’s Mr. Negative has been featured on the Sounds of Young New York CD.
SPUN is currently residing in New York City where he is the DJ, curator and organizer of P.S.1/MoMA’s prestigious warm up music series. Considered by many to be New York’s best summertime party, averaging close to 4000 people each Saturday. He is also the Thursday night resident at the ultra hip APT. His latest release, DJ Spun’s “Inside Tips for Healthy Sex” is receiving heavy airplay and chart action from top underground DJ’s worldwide…
