Musical Gems from the Sanctuary's Dance-floor
---------------------------------------------
Top 10 SOULFUL SINGLES of 2001: BLAZE, MAW, ROBERT OWENS, ULTRA, RON TRENT, RESTLESS SOUL, JOVONN, VIOLA, MONDO GROSSO & DJ OJI Head our list of the year's best.
December 28 2001
"MINE TO GIVE" by PHOTEK with ROBERT OWENS on vocals (DAVID MORALES mixes) on Virgin Records. DJ Oji picked this up when he returned from a gig in Manchester last Winter. Who can argue with anything that the legendary Chicago House vocalist and producer Robert Owens puts out. And "MINE TO GIVE" is no exception. In a collaboration with British tech house producer PHOTEK and ace remixer DAVID MORALES, this release combines the best of the old and new school styles.
"HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE" by BLAZE featuring vocalist ALEXANDER HOPE on the LIFELINE label and soon remixed by TIMMY REGISFORD (Shelter Records). KEVIN HODGE, JOSH MILAN and company maintained their status as soulful house music's most consistent songwriters and producers during 2001 with this fabulous release from their NATURAL BLAZE album and cd. DJ's OJI & SAM 'THE MAN' BURNS both work the hypnotic groove of this song to dance-floor perfection at the Sanctuary. Yes, the quintessential BLAZE sound, R&B piano-based chord structures fused with compellingly soulful vocals, has never sounded more inspired than on "HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE." Tell Us?
"EARTH IS THE PLACE RMX" by NATHAN HAINES on the CHILLIFUNK and WAVE labels and produced by PHIL ASHER--RESTLESS SOUL. No -- this is not CHAKA KHAN. Although it sounds like her, it's really VERNA FRANCIS. And she's singing a powerful song that all women can relate to (and plenty of men too). This song -- for many -- was the song of the 2001 Winter Music Conference. All we can say is that it filled the dance-floor all year long. Keep drinking plenty of Red Bull, Phil
"MYSTIC SOUL" by JOVONN on the DANCE TRACKS RECORDINGS "DANCE 2 VIBE" EP. Glenda and Babatunde first really noticed this brilliantly deep and soulful track at the DANCE TRACKS PARTIES this past summer in NYC. Reminiscent of ROY AYERS' on the vibes, this jazz -oriented instant deep house classic is suprisingly without the vocal spoken word accompaniments that have become talented producer, JOVONN's trademark. It was very good sign when guest DJ JOEY LANNOS (Paradise Garage, Body & Soul) opened with this track at the Sanctuary's Holiday In Paradise Christmas Party.
"LAMENTATIONS" by RON TRENT with CARL HANCOCK RUX on vocals on GIANT STEPS RECORDS. What can we say about this release except it was one of the many reasons why RON TRENT'S "Deep Into the Vibe of House" Party with DJ OJI was such a tremendous success at the Sanctuary. First introduced on our dance floor by DJ Pope, this soulful release was almost tailor-made for intimate venues like the Sanctuary, where expressive dancers really get into the lyrics of certain songs. And CARL HANCOCK RUX's compelling vocals together with RON TRENT's sublime production genius made this a song that foreshadowed the spiritual legacy of the year 2001. ROBBIPROMOTER say this was the single of the year in NYC. It did narrowly edge-out RON TRENT's USG release co-written and produced with ANTHONY NICHOLSON on PRESCRIPTION RECORDINGS --"HAVE I LOST YOU" featuring SE'VERE on vocals. Was it a great year for Ron or what?
"STAR SUITE" remix of MONDO GROSSO by BLAZE featuring MONDAY MICHURU on King Street Sounds. From the first week DJ Doug Smith dropped this at the Sanctuary, it was club favorite. MONDO GROSSO'S intriguing minimalist spoken word jazz saga received an infectiously deep and soulful Afro-Brazilian reconstruction and upgrade -- as only BLAZE can do. Between the message, the music, and the vibe -- it doesn't get any better than this release.
"LIKE A BUTTERFLY" by vocalist PATTI AUSTIN on the MASTERS AT WORK RECORDS label and produced by "LITTLE LOUIE" VEGA and KENNY "DOPE" GONZALEZ. MASTERS AT WORK added a little lyrical assistance from BLAZE in dropping yet another dance-floor sensation. A favorite of DJs OJI and HENRY 'DA MAN, this soulful and uplifting song bears a close resemblance to diva PATTI Austin's award-winning vocals on QUINCY JONES' "RAZZMATAZZ."
"TWISTED" by ULTRA NATE on the STRICTLY RHYTHM label with production work by 4-HERO & D-INFLUENCE off the "STRANGER THAN FICTION" CD. Going 'round and 'round in your heart and soul, ULTRA'S sultry voice over-top a sambatic, down-tempo deep house structure leaves the dancer in a state of, of -- well the Brazilians have the perfect word for this -- SAUDAUDE (pronounced: sew-da-jay) -- or sweet sadness. DJ SAM "THE MAN" BURNS played this song religiously and DJ OJI served it on special occasions during the year. Is it any wonder that BLAZE is about to bless us with a remix. Give-it-up to ULTRA for writing the ultimate 21st century deep and soulful love song the next time you see girlfriend at the Sanctuary.
"I MIGHT DO SOMETHING WRONG" by TORTURED SOUL featuring CHRISTIAN URICH on CENTRAL PARK RECORDING and remixed by OSUNLADE for YORUBA PEOPLE MUSIC. The "Original, Yoruba Lonely Mix" is all of that. Ultra smooth, ultra cool, and ultra soulful. No wonder we got plenty of emails from the fellas when this song broke.
"LIL GIRL (PUT CHA CLOTHES BACK ON)" by VIOLA SKYES on NERVOUS RECORDS. Produced by KYLE "SMALL" SMITH. This incredible song takes us back to our GARAGE vocal roots. Colorful layers of piano and winding horn played underneath VIOLA's strong vocal performance. There are even subtle key changes that you rarely hear in today's productions. And then there's that killer hook: "PUT 'CHA CLOTHES BACK ON." Listen to these lyrics and you might just learn something. This was a favorite of DJs SHADRACH & TIM EURE. This song was first played at the Sanctuary by DJ Pope, who also
interviewed the producer Kyle Small on WEAA's "Underground Experience".
For providing an inspirational message of peace and love, DJ OJI's production of "WE LIFT OUR HANDS (IN THE SANCTUARY)" was one of the most compelling singles of 2001. In both his lyrics, production work (including the Afro-Sanctuary mix) and in UNA's moving vocals (remember her performance at Sanctuary's Paradise Garage Party), this forthcoming SANCSOUL RECORDS single demonstrates the bold artistry and vision that are a hallmark of all truly great soulful, underground house music.
This is from our dance floor and we appreciate your feedback.

Blaze/James Toney Project (T. Regisford Rmx) -- Lovely Ones
MAW f/Patti Austin -- Like A Butterfly
MAW f/Roy Ayers -- Our Time Is Coming
NATHAN HAINES w/Verna Francis -- EARTH IS THE PLACE
The other tracks are hitting too, but these seem to be making a mark out here right now..
