i'm planning on buying a new Mac and want to do all of my mixing via the new system. i've been comparing the two systems and i'm not quite sure what the major differences are or, why one is better than the other.

also, what are some of the minimum requirements i need to make sure the new system has?

I've got the same question. What would I do? Buy a PC wich is a lot cheaper, a G4 or the G5 of which I personally think is too expensive. The hardware I have is Roland MC 303(midi), MS1(midi), Sp808 with I/O expansion and midi in out and thru.
I would definately buy a Virus 3 , two Mackie Speakers and a midi interface.
I still have some doubt about the computer itself, the soundcards(Pulsar,XTC???) and the programs. At school we have lessons about Qbass, Logic, Protools, Reason... We only did Qbass for now. What's your opinion?

Not wanting to fan the flames of a Mac vs PC debate, but bear in mind that Macs have a very long shelf life. You pay more in the short term, but in 5 years time that G4 will still be able to run the latest software.

when you say shelf life what are you referring to? durability of the hardware itself?

beyond that, either Mac or PC is going to last about the same given that the current fastest Mac is on par with the current fastest PC's

No problem, I'm in the middle of this Mac/Pc debate, and it's hard to choose. Some say Mac is better, others say PC is better.
Anyway, I have to make a dicision somehow.
    Thanks for the advice...
    Peace,

got my G4 before the G5 came out and it's been doing great for me ever since,
i just have to upgrade RAM and CPU speed .
I think the only difference is that the G5 has dual processors, which makes it faster and smoother runnning,
    not sure though.
but the G4 is still a good workhorse.

Experienced first hand. Nothing beats a well-configured, well-maintained Mac for music applications.

Hit me with a PM if you want some offline support for this one.

The pci cards might not work with the G5 so your going to have to check MOTUs website for compatability. On another tip, Apple is going to release the next generation G5 sometime this summer. It might be worth the wait since it will probably be much faster & maybe cheaper for the current models.

I've used Macs since '84 and currently use both and I think "well configured" Macs and PC's are now equal for music applications. Macs used to be better, but now they're both great.
