I want to get a budget mic for vocals. now I'm not talking about a shure sm58. Something for about a thousand dollars. I just don't really have an idea of higher end mics. need suggestions.

Sorry can't help, try www.futureproducers.com it's the most active production forum on the net. Probably even got a whole forum dedicated to mics.

do you have a good mic pre?

i have read a lot of good things about the Rode NT2-A which you can get for $400 at sweetwater.com

if you don't have a nice mic preamp it might be worth splitting that $1000 up between a mic and a decent pre. i don't have much recent experience in that department though so maybe someone else here who records vocals regularly can make some specific recommendations.

I think Dennis F may well be one who can chip in with some good advice in this department.

    1k mics?...
Equitek makes amazing mics for underneath 1k

Neumann TLM-103 ...can't beat it for that price..though it needs a very warm pre amp to tone down the midrange.

Audio Technica AT series anything in 40XX series is incredible. Just make sure you get one who's diaphgram can handle a hi db level.

Rode NT series- pretty good mic for budget money.

In all fairness and honesty. I've heard amazing records done with an sm-57. You wouldn't believe the amount of major label projects done with that microphone. Really. If you get an amazing pre amp...then it's on.

    hope this helps
