What records did you learn to mix with?

When "Stars on 45" first came out, a DJ friend (Earnest Nathen) taught me the basics with two copies of this record. BEAT-CLAP BEAT-CLAP

The rest is history.

What records changed the way you play music?

I learned on two copies of a hip hop record. Several different ones, actually.

I found blending the instrumental+vocals over the instrumental the easiest was for me to get the hang of things.

i learned playing my brother in laws records.
mainly classics, disco, and hip hop.
i didn't use 2 specific records but rather i
just kept on trying to mix and record sets.
i would listen to the mistakes and learn from them
until i actually learned mix pretty decently.
i was spinning mid sized raves and underground parties within 7 months of making the decision that i wanted to dj.

i mixed techno before i mixed deep house. i don't recall what records, but i remember finding it EXTREMEly challenging.

The first time I made a mix I had only one turntable but two cassette decks. I would record one record onto tape, play the tape on one of the decks, mix another record while recording this process on the 2nd deck. By the end of the mix the beginning sounded like complete caca from re-recording it so many times. I think I still have this tape.

Oh yeah, they were all hip hop records circa 86/87. I do know T La Rock's "Back to Burn" was on it.

I don't remember what exact records they were. Harry A. showed me how to blend and I just kept practicing/recording myself and listening to the mixes. I still have a lot of those trainwreck tapes.

The first real mix I ever attempted was on my friend's radio show in college. I was under the very foolish impression that if a song sampled a track, then it must be the same pitch as the original. I think I used EPMD's "You Gots To Chill" and and original copy of "More Bounce To The Ounce". Needless to say, it was a big freakin' trainwreck. The turntables were very old school radio station joints with no pitch control at all. Afterwards, I was like "ohhhhhhhhhh...I get it"
