I understand that Dave Chappelle is being sought to play the role of Legendary New York Street Comedian Charlie Barnett, For those who are not up on Charlie Barnett, Well, This brother used to rock straight up off the top of the head type jokes and comedy routines at Washington Square park in the village during the late 70's/Early 80's, To the point were he was looked upon as a legend on the streets of New York for comedy, Charlie Barnett also appreared in several Miami Vice episodes during the early to mid 80's as Nogard Neverly Lamont(Noogie), This brother deserves a movie about his life because he entertained so many people in the park and its a shame his career never came off the way it should have, I personally feel that Dave Chappelle will do a good job, But, My first choice would have been a cat named Aries Spears from Mad TV fame when it comes to a cat who fits Charlie Barnetts style of straight buckwild hood type of comedy(Charlie Murphy would also make a very good choice), Another New York Street Comedian legend who should always be remembered by those who checked him out back in the early 80's is Albert Owens, Two giants in comedy from back in the day(Charlie Barnett and Albert Owens), Who never came off the way they were supposed to
    But, Will always be remembered.

Charlie Barnett was one of a kind! "The Nugg Man - Nuggie" was a dope character on Miami vice, but he had other great shit out there.

When I went to NYC to do Def Comedy Jam in '92, finding Charlie Barnett was like a pilgrimage. A few of us cats that weren't NYC natives sought him out to no avail. Unfortunately I never found an opportunity to meet him before he passed on. :(

One couldn't find a better subject to make a film from? Hmm...maybe I should toss my hat in the ring as a director...

    RIP Charlie Barnett

He was a FUNNEE Mutha Phuka! I used to check him out at the fountain in Central Park. Al Owens also. This was years ago, when that was a hang out spot extraordinaire! Weed hawkers all over the place; Bacardi and Heinekein hawkers too. When Charlie started up, the crowds came. Now it's all yuppiefied and tame. He was in the movie "DC Cab" and I once rented a video called "Charlie Barnett's Terms Of Enrollment" which I saw on the video store shelf while browsing. I also wonder what ever happened to Rick Aviles, who was another rising comedian whose flame suddenly flickered out.

Charlie Barnett was a very talented comic. He was extremely quick-witted. He was in fact picked for SNL but he could not read the teleprompter so alas Eddie Murphy got the gig. Sadly the last time I saw him I was eating at Eva's Restaurant on 8th St where he went into the bathroom with a woman and they came out 20 minutes later nodding....very sad indeed!

Mike Johnson, I have to say while Aries Spears is very talented indeed - those of us who used to go to Comedy Night at Club 88 hosted by Bill Bellamy remember that was one of the places Aries got his start as a minor - I think Chappelle might do a better job. Chappelle could even look like Charlie. JMO.
