When we first started DJ'ing, my friends and I had a DJ / promo crew called the Funk Fiends. We started it in the early 90s. I know that's not that long ago, but we seemed so much younger then!
2 of my friends played drum & bass, which was still being referred to as UK breakbeats and jungle back then. Then me and this girl were the House / funky DJs, and Recondo was the hip-hop DJ.
Between the crew we DJ'd afterhours, clubs, raves and the side rooms at bigger events since House or D&B wasn't usually the main attraction as it was usually techno or just bigger name DJs. We also would play at The Roxy on Friday nights in the mid 90s at a party called Together a lot. Francois K and LLV plus many others graced the decks as guests there. I had the pleasure of opening the main floor there, and playing the side room (upstairs vip lounge) with Recondo doing funk/soul/hip-hop too. We threw some one-offs that were dope from basement parties to clubs we used like The Octagon for instance, and later on did some fun weekly parties most notably 2 year running weekly called "Hot Fudge Sundays".
The girl quit DJ'ing, but the 2 of my friends (Christian Bruna and DJ Beau) are still spinning and are pretty respected drum & bass DJs, together they are called 50/50. They play raves and D&B parties all over the east coast and get flown places like LA and Puerto Rico to spin, and have some decent records out. Recondo sometimes dabbles in new records. And I am obviously still having fun with this stuff...
