i know that there're a few football (with a round ball) fans here so i thought that a thread re the imminent season and expectations for would be appropriate

my thoughts:
top three (in order):
arsenal (with or without vieira)
chelsea
man u

having kept uptodate with arsenal's preseason (and as those you who watched the community shield will know) jose antonio reyes is gonna be massive this year and when he and henry hit form together opposing defenders won't know what to do against such speed and such skill - can't wait

vieira would be a loss, but there's enough depth there to see the champions thru

chelsea? so many good players, but perhaps not the spirit of arsenal and certainly not the experience of playing together. signings are definitely good, but i can't help but think that maybe mourinho was doing porto favours with some of the prices paid and drogba? lot of money for someone who's had one good season (as good as it was)

man u? i guess every team has peaks and troughs and they're going into a trough - if you ask me they'd be better without fergie

and as for scotland - i hope celtic do it again, but it ain't gonna be as easy as last year

Gonna have to go with Chelsea for the Premiership and Rangers for the Scottish.

I can't say I disagree with any of your predictions chewie, but I am somewhat biased. I'm really looking forward to the start of the new season, and seeing the Champions running out on the breautiful green grass at the Home of Football.

ps I think we can successfully defend our title without Vieira: he missed more than a quarter of the season last year.

Over here (Canada) we don't get to see Division 1 (I guess it's now called The Championship, for no good reason) so I never get to see my hometown of Coventry, who were beaten tonight by Cardiff, dammit. At any rate, I think Chelsea is good enough to take the title this year.

Well it's not gonna be the mighty Leeds :( Arsenal all the way for this one - I’m obviously biased but anyone except Manchester United – although Alan Smith will be sensational for them (definite Fantasy League player for 2004/05)

I see we lost 2-1 to Gillingham last night Two years ago that was Valencia in the semi's of the C/League

I thought we could do it without him, but with him I think judgement is a good.

Chelsea has to be the favorite. Arsenal has as much skill in their starting 11, but they don't have the depth of Chelsea. Man U has the depth but not the skill level, and their key players have long passed their peak (Keane, Giggs, Scholes).

Chelsea did great this off-season. This time Abramovich spent his money wisely, unlike last year when he just bought whoever was available. I love Ricardo Carvalho in the center. Drogba and Kezman will be unstoppable, and either one could lead the league in goals. Robben is great on the wing, and Smertin is a tenacious mid with skill, kinda like Edgar Davids. The only overrated addition is Paolo Fereira, but even he is solid. And then there is Mourinho, who has proven to be a superb coach. If they get good goaltending, they will be unstoppable in England and in Champions League.

As an Arsenal fan I've got to say Arsenal (but I'm nervous after last seasons achievements).

Playoff for second place is happening tomorrow at the Chelsea vs Man Utd game

sean, are you saying that as a fan or neutral. agree on scholes, and keane still good (but def past best). dannyboy, one thing utd do not possess at the moment is depth. they are in a pretty desperate state at the moment with 5/6 players out due to injury and olympics. should be a great game tommorrw. alan smith looks great at the moment, but reality is he would have jus about made the bench in the treble winning team

sean, i hope you're right, i really think it could go either way. we are very strong with a fully fit squad, but i worry about what happens if a couple of key players go out (a la collapse post Rio ban last year). i still think SAF has got what it takes to win the league and yes he loves that seige mentaility. SAF has obviously been fantastic for us, but i've always felt a bit disapointed that he has only won one european cup for us. i find it a bit embarrising that a club our size has only 2 ECs to it's credit. should have at least 4/5. i don't doubt SAF's ability to win the league again, but i do doubt his ability to get the EC.

Ps i hate the term Man U/Man Yoo, that's what ABU's and cockneys call us!

SAF is the best Tactician in the game....never doubt him. ;) We had some bad luck last season and it just has to go down as a learning experience. Besides, look how much the squad has changed from the trble winning side. We can do it mate...and having Carlos Quiros back is a major boost also...I think bringing in Walter Smith temporarily fucked things up a little for us. As for Rio...one of the best defenders in the world. Having him back will work wonders-especially for Alan Smith (I love that guy!!!).
