HBO has a TV movie depicting the mad grimy life around the 42ndst area in Manhattan during the 70’s/80’s, Called, “The Duece”, That airs on Sunday night at 9:00pm and run for 7 more shows, “The Duece”, Is directed by David Simon(Who was the creator and director of, “Wire’, “The Corner”, During the early to late 2000’s) and George Pelecanos was the co-writer of, “The Duece”, Too, Their are more

than afew familiar faces in, “The Duece’, Like, Meth(Method man from Wu-Tang), Larry Gilyard(“The Wire”), James McDaniel(Homicide, Malcolm X), Etc, Going by the trailer for, “The Duece”, With good fortune/LOL, “The Deuce”, Will have an accurate accocunt of the grimy side of 42ndst during the 70’s and 80’s, That only cats who traveled in those circles will know about(Exhibit A;Stickup kids, 3-card

Molly murphs, ShowWorld XXX theatre by the Port Authority bus station on 42ndst and 8thave in Manhattan), The spot(Hoe house/LOL), on 42ndst between Ave of the Americas and Broadway(Well, At least that’s what cats you to build with me on in regards to the location of this spot, Though, I’ve never been there before/LOL), The National movie theatre on the corner of 44thst and ave of the

America’s(The National movie theatre was the very first movie theatre in the country to show, “Caligulia”, In 1979/Facts/LOL), and the National movie theatre stayed open until 4:00am in the morning 7 days a week too/LOL), Dance spots in the 42ndst/Times square are include, “The Hotel Diplomat, The Constellation, Which was on the first floor of the, “Hotel Diplomat” on 43rdst and Broadway, During

Late 80’s), Etc, I’m looking forward to seeing, “The Duece”, Though, The storyline is best told thru the eyes of cats who ran on those very circles that a movie is depicted on(So, I’m prepared to see some fantasy and fiction too/LOL), On the low, the Porno industry was created

and started by the Gambino family out of Brooklyn during the early/mid 60’s, The the Gambino fronted the money to build and maintain x amount of spots(Porn Movie theatres), In the Times Square are and on 42ndst during the 60’s,70’s,80’s, Etc(Facts).

I would like to add two very important landmarks in the Times Square area during the 70’s,80’s,90’s(That i’m very sure will not be depicted or mentioned in the Duece movie this sunday/LOL), and those 2spots are Quad Studio on 49thst and 7thave in Manhattan and The Music Factory on 44thst and 7thave(Which is no longer there), Quad Studio was the spot that mad cats in the music industry

Recorded in(Exhibit A:Dionne Warwick, Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman, Mtume, D-Train, Unlimited Touch, BBQ-Band, Freddie Jackson,Kasif, Ace of Base, Etc, But, Quad Studio’s is infamous for the Tupac Shakur shooting in the lobby in 1994, The Music Factory was one of New York city’s legendary record stores during the 70’s,80’s,90’s, Before the Music Factory closed in 1992, Hiphop cats like

Flash(Furious 5), Charlie Chase(Cold Crush 4), DXT(Zulu Nation), Theodore(Fantastic 5), Red Alert, Jazzy Jay(Zulu Nation), Jam Master Jay(Rip), Etc, All used to shop for plates and Breaks at The Music Factory during the 70’s,80’s,90’s, And also, Much respect to the memory of Stanley Platzer(Who ran the Music Factory during the day times going back to the late 70’s/Facts).

I missed one very important landmark that was located in the Times Square area during the 80’s and that spot was Bond’s International(44thst and Broadway), Which was a legendary dance music spot during the early/mid 80’s, Mike Stone(Well-respected Dance music promoter during the 70’s,80’s,90’s in New York city), Used to promote dance music throwdowns at Bond’s International ,

Featuring, Kenny Carpenter rocking at Bond’s International during the early 80’s, After, Kenny Carpenter was cancelled from his spot mixing at Studio 54 in late 1980 by Steve Rubell(Who cancelled Kenny Carpenter because of Kenny Carpenter’s propensity to run black music dance oriented plates, Opposed to the more commerical dance music plates that Richie Kazor and Nicky Siano were runnin

At Studio 54’s height during the mid to late 70’s(Though, Nicky Siano was cancelled from his spot rockin at Studio 54 for runnin, “Trans Europe Express”, By Kraftwerk), From the beginning of the plate(Money/Nicky Siano was fired on the spot by Steve Rubell for that in 1977/LOL), I wish a cat from New York city like Spike Lee would have directed, “The Deuce’, Just for the authenticity that Spike Lee

Would have captured thru-out the whole movie(No dis-respect to David Simon), But, A cat from Baltimore cannot captured the grimy shit that a cat from New York city can when depicting a movie project set in New York city(Just like a cat from New York city or any other region of the country, Could not capture the atmosphere and setting on the streets of Baltimore,Maryland while Depicting, “The

Wire”, Which was directed by David Simon, The 1st installment of, “The Duece”, Was just as i pictured it to be/LOL, Maybe, “The Deuce”, Will pickup the next 7 episodes to show the truely grimy side of 42ndst and the Times Square area and the cats and young ladies who made 42ndst st and Times Square, “That spot”, To frequent for mad fun on a regular basis during the 70’s,80’s(Facts), Also, I knew a

Cat(Who shall remain nameless/LOL), Who had young ladies on the stroll at a spot called, “The Bristol Hotel”, On Parsons Blvd and 90thave, Right around the corner from the Jamaica YMCA, Which was a mad very grimy spot that frequented mad young ladies on the stroll during the 70’s and 80’s in Jamacia,Queens, Along with the, “Very High Priced”, Young ladies on the stroll who frequented the

33rdst to35thst and Park ave area in Midtown Manhattan during the 70’s and 80’s(Young ladies wanted, “2-G’s”, and up, Well, That’s what i heard/LOL), Also/LOL, Young ladies on the stroll used to frequent a dance musc spot called, “LoveLite”, On 33rdst and 10thave by the Westside Highway during the mid 80’s to early 90’s(If i remember correctly, David Morales was the resident at, “The Lovelite”,

Though, The 1 and only night that i went to the Lovelite”, Timmy Regisford was rockin there in December of 1985, With Carl Beane,

Performing his classic, “I was born this way”, While young ladies were dancin and pickin up cats to get it up straight with outside the Lovelite on the Westside Highway(Well, That’s what i was told by cats/LOL), Leroy Washington was the owner of, “the Lovelite”, And Leroy Washington was the cat who replaced Kenny Carpenter at Studio 54 in late 1980(money was nice rockin a spot musically and

Way more commercially oriented in programming music to run than Kenny Carpenter, Who could have been more commercially oriented too, but, Money stuck by his principals and ran what he felt the crowd would rock too, But, Steve Rubell wanted to bring back that old Studio 54 crowd(White celebrities), That Kenny Carpenter cared less about(And Nicky Siano cared less about the type of

Crowd at Studio 54 too, Which is why Nicky Siano was fired from Studio 54 for runnin, “Trans Europe Express”, In 1977 from the Beginning at that/LOL, On the low, LL made plate called, “The Bristol Hotel in 1987, Though, There was never a room 515, That LL was rhymin about in his plate, “The Bristol Hotel”, Which was a 2 story spot in Jamaica,Queens.

Another landmark record store on 42ndst and Ave of the Americas was, “Downstairs records”, During the late 70’s thru the 80’s, “Downstairs records”, Was located in the 42ndst and Ave of the Americas F-Train station by Bryant park and the barbershop leading to the F-train stop to Queens, Featuring, Flowers working at, “Downstairs records”, During the mid 70’s to early

80’s, “Downstair’s Records’, Was not the original, “Downstairs records”, The Original, “Downstairs records”, Was located on 44thst between 5thave and ave of the Americas(In an office building on the first floor), The Original, “Downstairs records”, Opened during mid 70’s(Around 1975/76), Featuring a young lady by the name of Yvonne Turner working at Downstairs records during the mid 70’s to

Early 80’s(Exhibit A:Yvonne Turner was the first female co-producer for a, “house music plate”, In 1987, Co-producing the plate, “Take Some time out”, by Arnold Jarvis, Co-Produced by Yvonne Turner and Tommy Musto, “The Premier of “The Deuce”, Last week depicted the 42ndtst area in 1971 and i’m very sure the next 7 shows will depict the 42ndst area that I have built on in this thread in regards to

Grimy shit, Cats movin weight, Young ladies on the stroll, Stickup kids on the stroll/LOL, 3-card molly murphs, The Chock full of nuts coffes shop on the corner of 42ndst and ave of the Americas, Being frequented by pimps and their young ladies on the stroll during the late 60’s thru the 80’s, Along with the, “Peep show”, Industry on 42ndst and the surrounding times square area during the 60’s,70’s,80’s,

Etc,(Facts), On the low, the 2nd, “Downstairs records”, on 42dnst and ave of the americas Opened during the early 80’s(Exhibit B:Around 1980).

There used to be a Howard Johnson’s resturant on the corner of 46thst and Broadway that young ladies on the stroll and their pimps used to frequent during the late 60’s thru the 80’s(It would be nice to see some of these Times Square landmarks in the coming episodes of, “The Deuce”, In the next few weeks).

    Money Mike!

Great post in regards to all the classic mentions. I kinda feel the same way about the series “The Duece”. I feel like its kinda hard to capture the true essence of The Duece, watching it may piss me off a little if its too cheesy.

Great mentions of all the classic Duece locations.

I know you remember the huge Nathan’s on 43rd and Bway

Bigscore, You’re most definitely right in regards to your prior comments on, “The Deuce”, Being to cheesy(I prefer to say, mad weak and not enough black folks in it for those who know how 42dndst used to be in 1970 thru the 80’s,My man/Facts), Though, The true essence would have come about if, “The Duece”, Was shot during the 70’s and 80’s, Instead

Of now(That’s why, “The Wire’, Came off mad lovely, Due to, “The Wire”, Being shot in today’s community and setting, Were you capture all of the grimy shit that the streets possess and to film, “The Duece”, in today’s setting, Well/LOL, I’ll wait to see the next 6 episodes to give my true assessment, My man/LOL.
