Nice trip back down Memory Lane with the Muzic Box piece. The summer of 86 was the shit. The Box, CODs, LaMirage, Pleasuredome. The scene was at it's peak.

This is from The Face magazine, 1986 - the UK was definetely switched on to what was happening in chicago around this time..

The Face also ran some great articles on the beginnings of techno in detroit too, I should dig them up and scan them in

Great article, they even mentioned the New Music Seminar party at Better Days. 85? 86? Somewhere around there. I remember that party well....it was a BLAST. I think Darryl blew like three tweeters that night with his voice. LOL

Loved the name check. [Wink]

Hey, I remember them taking those pictures...but until now I'd never seen them.
If ya piece the pages together you'll notice I'm wearing one of my favourite (wish I could find it now) "Fiorucci" sweatshirts.

And me with the 909 that I sold to Adonis (what was I thinkin'?).

Bruce, do you remember when we did the sound-check at BD? I can't remember if it was Darryl or Loleeta that nearly had a baby because I hit a key on the keyboard while they were doing the mic check. Loverly people but DIVAs to the max.

Ok I've scanned through the article and recall a lot of it. The chick that wrote the interview, Sheryl, spent a lot of time in the vocal booth while I sampled her English accent.
You can hear her on Autobahn "Do You Like This Beat" my attempt at an alternative sound.
All the sounds except for the bassline were samples that Joe and I did.
Joe Smooth and I would spend HOURS just sampling stuff. We even brought my motorcycle into the studio to sample the engine sound.
The dog barking on "Time 2 Jack (the remix)" is an actual dog owned by Duane Thamm Jr.

As for the "You Can't Hide" (Frankie's first single) that brings back a LOT of memories.
I was living in Rogers Park at the time, went to AKA's on a Latin music night and heard this great band. I hired the brass section to do the live horns on "You Can't Hide". So many people didn't know that we were using musicians and orchestras back then. So many people think THEY started the acoustic and orchestra thing.

Man, I could go on for days.

Chip E...please go on!

What ever happened to Peter Black? He made some good records on DJI.

"I Can't Stop" was a favourite of mine. Also, "How Far I Go".

Simon,

thanks sooo much for the article.

Jolyon,

I'm not sure what Peter's up to.

Oh...the percussion on "You Can't Hide" is live as well.

Femme Fion were another Chip E. produced act...because I wanted to "get with" one of the sisters (but I never did).
They introduced themselves to me after one of Armando and Terri's great Bizmark Hotel "House Awards" parties. After inviting ONE of them to the house/studio a couple of times, I realized that they were always gonna be together.
So I threw together "Jack The House".

I think the Harri Dennis & The IT story is in the archives here.

Mark, Its not easy to read because of the size ? i.e. it does not fit on your screen and you have to scroll ?

One problem I encountered trying to make it smaller was the the text becomes unreadable. You could buy a bigger monitor [Razz]
