Leonard, you're definitely right about the bleached blue jean leg thing, made famous by a fine honey named Chemin Abner. We called them "Chemin pants." But unless I missed something (which is likely when you start talking about the Playground), I believe that "69" dance was actually called the 6'3". A dance named after my boy, a Loft-goer, Kevin 6'3" Herron. As for your take on Farley and Jesse, I think I'll stay out of that one.

I agree though, no reason to dis nyc here, AK i was waiting for your response to the Jesse Saunders comment, i understand if you won't though, I will say that when i read his bio i was a little skeptical about his claims, peace mark

Leonard, "Disco Toni" Shelton is still around the Hyde Park/South Shore area. Has a bunch of kids but the body is intact! She always attends are annual Chosen Few Old Skool Reunion picnic around 4th of July (more on that later, and I hope the Deep House Page family will come out in force this summer). As for Jesse, let's just say he can be "out there" at times. It brought back something when Chip mentioned that Jesse sort of dissed his early work when he brought it to Jesse. I remember Jesse letting me hear his On and On track sometime before it was released. I told him I liked the beats but he could've done without the vocal. It was an honest reaction and I didn't mean to hurt his feelings, but I think I did. Not sure he's ever forgiven me for that.

Some other "preppie" hangouts were; DaVinci Manor, The Mansion, Jack N Jills.Remember Herb Kent talking about gettin the "redeye" from doing too much "punkout"..and those dark incognoito sunglasses.Leonard mentioned the "preppie" trend lasting 1 year after '81'. Musically, that may have been the case but I remember still referring to people as "preppies" well into '84'. In fact I remember in 83/84 when those "Harold Ickles Boys" on Cermak would come out on the street at 2:00 a.m to "Rob Preppies" coming from Sauers.I've seen a few "preppies" get beat down walking to the train.

Herb Kent also used to play 'Rock Lobster', 'Martin Circus', 'Whip It', and 'Count CoolOut', and he would play the full length versions! Can you imagine any radio station today bold enough to give you all 14-15+ of Martin Circus??? It wouldn't happen!!!Who remembers seeing the Hot Mix Five down at the 'Sheba Disco' on Ashland? God, what I wouldn't give to go back in time for just one weekend. We were truly blessed to have a variety of parties with talented dj's each and every week that were guaranteed to be slammin! One more name out the past: Mike Winston (opening up for Frankie at the Powerplant).

One more thing about that 106 "WXFM" Punkout show; Aside from BMX's HotMix 5, I recall, Herb was the one of the first to feature mini-mixes, primarily from Jessie Saunders and Wayne Williams, on the radio.

Damn, Frequency 7...didn't know that was by Visage. Some other Herby joints; Out Come the Freaks-Was not Was Dragon Attack-Queen Rapture-Blondie Walking on Thin Ice-Yoko Ono Wheels of Steel-Grandmaster Flash Apache/8th Wonder-Sugarhill Gang Turning Japanese-Vapors Listening to this show, as a 15 year-old, laid the foundation for accepting what was later to become House for me. I could not have possibly dug all that Ronnie was playing if I had not been pre-disposed to some of it from Herb Kent's show.I Don't think Herb even realizes the influence that his format had on us at that time.

Actually, something that I can add to the telling of the history on this thread, is that, I'm pretty sure that, it was my copy of Martins Circus that Herb Kent played, the first time he played it. At W.Y. a lot of us had been getting caught up in the whole DJ craze that was getting started back in 80,81 (Rob Burns, Greg G, Cordell,...). Since our school was close to downtown, and a lot of us had to go through downtown, on our way home, we found ourselves on Plymouth Court a lot (The original Imports). I remember when it was just one little room, that you had to enter into from a parking garage. They only had a few bins with one copy of the records, and they would go in the back to get you a copy of what you wanted. I was one of the lucky ones in our little group to be the first to get a copy of Martins Circus. One of my classmates, a guy named Tim Hunt (who is now a C.P.O), knew Herb Kent, through family connections, or something like that. Tim had run into Herb, and was talking to him about the new music. Herb had already heard something about what was going on in the streets (I'm sure he heard a lot from his daughter Robin, who I saw, hanging out, quite a bit) and was thinking about adding some of the stuff to the show. He invited Tim to come on the show to play some records and talk about what we were calling Punkin' Out (it wasn't called house yet). Tim wasn't really that interested in being a DJ and didn't have a lot of records, so he asked to borrow some of mine. I don't remember how many, or which records, I lent him, but I do remember Martins Circus, because me and my crew were all freakin' out when we heard it on the radio. I got my records back, and I don't know if Herb had carted the record, or if he just got his own copy. But I got a lift every time I heard it. I'm not even trying to claim that I helped start something, because if he hadn't gotten my copy, he would have gotten someone else's. But, that was a funny little piece of history (among some of the many that I've been lucky to experience) that I had to hold on to. And LRROY, It's funny that you mention Lenell Willis, that was my boy. He was always out at different high schools, especially W.Y., passing out pluggers for various parties. It seemed like he new everybody in the city. He was the one that actually introduced me to a lot of the scene and a lot of the people that I came to know. He had heard me spin and was always telling people that I was going to be the next Farley. That's how I got to know Farley and Steve. He was actually helping to push my DJing career along, but I went away to college and that slowed things down. I did some DJing at college, but when I came back there were so many people that had gotten further ahead of me, in terms of notoriety, that I decided to just concentrate on making House music instead of spinning it. That's how I ended up working with Hurley and E-Smoove. But, if I had known how big the International DJ phenomenon was to get, I would have kept doing it as a sideline. AK, Kevin "6-3" Herron, was another one of the people who helped to introduce me to this whole House thing. His girlfriend Wendy lived just up the block from where I grew up (74th & Philips, South Shore). He and another guy, from the neighborhood, Lono Brazil, used to tell us younger kids, who weren't old enough to get into the Warehouse(18) yet, stories about the club and got us hooked on the whole mystique. They also started introducing us to the music with tapes that they had gotten from people at the club and various other sources. He had joked with us, a few times that he made up the 6-3 dance when they were dancing at Wendy's house, and he stepped back and tripped over her cat. In his attempt to recover, cooly, he did a spinning move, that he liked and started to do regulary at the clubs. We still don't know what the true store is, or if was just pulling our legs, but it made sense. I remember Disco Toni Shelton came into the neighborhood a couple of times, with them, and I remember tripping about that. Toni was such an icon to a lot of us, when we first started partying, to just have her on our block was the sh** to us. Kevin was also a hell of a ball player. I remember seeing him up at some of the Kenwood outdoor tournaments, and, at least on the days I was there, he was playing his ass off. But there is some sad news? I don't know if you know, but, apparently he got caught up in drugs, or something, and was homeless for a while. I'm not sure if he is now, but I now that he has been. I still see him every now and then, on the street, in the Printer's Row area. I've talked to him and he told me that he is in school studying computers, or something like that. But, he doesn't look like he's doing that well, and I wonder if it's just pride talking. It's got to be a trip to go from where people all over the city knew your name, because there was a dance named after you, to being on the streets. Peace
