It always interest me that there were records that seem to do really well in Chicago, being Chicago classics like say Sing Sing Sing, that didnt seem to have the same impact in NY.
I was wondering if anyone cared to help compile a discography or discuss records that may seem to have been (or still are) big in the one city but not as big in the other.

Why do you think that was?
Also perhaps you should post some and others from NY may be able to confirm or deny?

Some cats played the tune, some didn't.I played it.I still like the song.Days like this is a party staple here, compared to Space rider.
What about big NY classics like say Weekend, Life Is Something Special, Is It All Over My Face, Love Heartache?
Did they get play when they came out in Chi?

Yup. Most definitely, especially Is It All Over My Face which still gets some play today.

Great Topic.
I've grown up listening to NY/NJ classics. I'd always considered myself very well versed in the classics. Then, I found this page and I uncovered the Chicago Disco Experience. Man, I don't know dogshit.
Chi Disco is a totally different species from NY Disco. The real irony is that many of the deepest CHI classics standards were records recorded in NY and NJ, which have gone unnoticed by the overwhelming majority of jocks that live here. For example, I'd never heard "Waterbed" before coming to the DHP and LTG Exchange is from NY.
This is an over-simplification, but NJ/NY classics tend to be the crowd's common, recognizable favorites. Chi Classics tend to loose the crowd in a constant, obscure stream of high velocity funk.
Now, that 's not to say that there aren't some serious music collectors with tons of obscure classic records in NY/NJ; Hippie, Danny Krivit, Peter Reyes, Nick Jones and Camacho come to mind. It's what gets the crowd going week after week in Chi vs. in NY/NJ. It's markedly different. [ April 30, 2004, 01:19 PM: Message edited by: upliftdisco365 ]

What JMJ says is true. My impression is that Italo was taken so much as a "genre" in New York. The songs that were played were just club songs.

Yea that’s what is freaking me out more and more and like you, I realized as soon as I joined but there is a whole set of all this deep ass old disco that seems to get played and respected in Chi that NY don’t know shit about.
It seems (which could just be that since NY is the bigger city) that Chi has done a good job of incorporating all of the NY stuff but NY doesn’t pay as much attention to a lot of music almost ‘discovered’ by Chi jocks at all.
Ps John I feel like a real heel cause I still haven’t gotten you that edit of Coco-Motion yet that you wanted me to burn.

Not really, in my opinion. The occasional "bongo" track would be dropped, but it is nothing massive.

Everything except Love Heartache were smashes here. Some tunes that were big,did not have any regional boundaries.
You also have to remember we liked our stuff more energized also. That's where the Italo comes in.Then you also have to add the early dj tool beat tracks that were released like Faces Drums and Mix your own stars.
Salsoul,Prelude and the Philly sound shaped things here. Not to include the loal talent of the Chi-sound soul scene. Some of our local tunes didn't make it big outside of here.Example-Omni-Out of my hands.Huuuge tune here,Frankie hepled blow it up,yet I've never heard it in any east coast mixes.

I forgot about the beat tracks. Were any of those huge outside of Chi? Stuff like Virgo Tracks, Faces Drums, Mix Your Own Stars, etc.
Italo stuff was DEFINITELY massive here and, personally, my favorite era.

There's mad jocks her ein Chi who bring it.Just because they don't post on DHP does not separate them.Everybody doesn't have a computer.
Trust me,there's cats who are playing all types of shit here in Chi.When Francois and Ron Trent played,I heard the set was packed.Everyone dug it,said he ws dope. He's back here soon, forgot the date, but he's with Derrick May,not too sure on how he's gonna go musically.
