In the danceclub world, where and when did the no-drinks-no-smokes-be-mindful-of-my-space culture start? Was it a disco thing? Pre-disco? Does it have cultural/ethnic roots? An age thing? Feel free to add your own questions and/or not answer these direct questions.
My Saturday night dodging lit cigarettes and avoiding precariously held beverages is what got me thinking about it.

okay darrow....when did it start? and when did it end?
in some clubs it's like they never knew...in others everyone with etiquette is on point.
man im still rubbing my back from a pounce i got on saturday...and one dude just stood to my left waving at his friends trying to talk over my head, cutting my space, adn when i nicely asked him to move, he was evil, had to go old school dancing stepping on toes and ribbing ribs to get him to move....it was crazi
ps. i almost got burnt...i dodged over 5 cigs. [ August 30, 2004, 12:56 PM: Message edited by: houseflower ]

I can understand the no drinks on the dancefloor thing..A person can spill their drink and create a slpippery spot that someone can slip and fall on ..or the glass gets broken on the floor and worse can happen...
People that smoke should be more mindful of possibly burning others but it's a nightclub and the two(drinking, smoking) go hand in hand..
Some can be rude on the dancefloor but overall people that I encounter tend to be most gracious when we bump or step on toes etc: They seem to understand that it was an accident and when ya got people on a floor doing all kinds of moves while feeling the spirit that these things will happen from time to time...
Ya want a crowd you've got it!!

There is one particular club that definitely seems every other person is holding a cigarette. I made comment on it yesterday as a matter of fact. I have been to many clubs where there are smokers, but this one is by far the smokiest! But not just that, but the PEOPLE seem totally insensitive or clueless as to their surroundings! There are more talkers, smokers, drinker, and plain ole folks just FALLING on the dance floor than any club experience I've ever had.

(Mild Rant Coming)
It's a self-contrived thing (often driven by ugly shit & feelings a person would never admit to - and often is masked as one person being cooler than the next) - but really ends up alienating that one person that over-assesses a dancefloor, and drives that person further out of touch ...
After-all, imagine if the drinkers & smokers complained about people dancing near the bar ... hmmmm ...
I've been in danceclubs (like the one I know is being referenced here) for 20+ years ... and have never had a problem having to dodge cigarettes "all night" - but I suppose if I was looking for it, planning for it, talking about it before/after the fact, workin' myself up - I'd get burned more often, and that would solidify a position ...
Of course there are always other options to head to countless other pristine places, where even if a person had an 8ft cigarrette, they still couldn't burn me, b/c that person & I are the only people there ...
Packed, slammin' weekly successful club nights have (relative) externalities ... it's the reason they are successful & moreover the reason they can bring in top talent (that many covet) ...

banning smoking gets rid of some of your problems. i was against the nyc ban at first because i thought it was intrusive and would kill the atmosphere, but i was wrong. it's great.

"Dodging" was more poetic license/dramatic affect than anything else. I thought the visual of someone dodging flaming cigarettes would be amusing.
I became aware of dancefloor etiquette (or maybe it was that I was aware of others' awareness of it) when I started going out to predominantly black House events back in the 80s. The instances of drinks on the floor seemed to be a lot less then other clubs/events and people seemed to be very conscious of each other's space. My assumption had been (and I guess still is) is that The Dance was extremely important and that it was important not to get in the way of The Dance. Spilled drinks, dancefloor antics, walking or shoving your way through people, etc. seem to be things that get in the way. And I'm not saying that dancefloor etiquetee was ONLY at black, House events; I'm simply saying that environment was my exposure to it.
I'd love for Mr. Burns to give his opinion on this since he preaches it so well on Sunday nights, and I don't think it has much to do with being self-contrived or wanting to appear cool.

funny that you say that... when someone spilled a drink on saturday i did what i always did when im in that space...ran to the bar got some towels and wiped it up...even though i didn't do it.....cause i didn't want ppl that were dancing there to slip...i remember that being habit for many club goers.....
i remember in black clubs mostly ppl doing that....and we were so conscious of that......and in red i will get the barman to get a guy to get a mop in a minute if it's too too wet due to whatever......

Luckily LA is very strict on smoking at clubs so I don't have that problem here and was able to easily and effectively kick that dumb habit. People drink on the floor all the time but doesn't really cause problems much ...
What I have a huge problem with is all the people that have the spacing concept of the LA Clippers.. shit.. just freaking be mindful and stop walking into me as I'm spinning... (my shin is so bruised from last night.. Spacing is crucial in floor etiquett

Very true Houseflower, they were more careful it seemed back in the day. They cupped and they blew the smoke in the air (up), now, they hold it straight out and blow the smoke right in your face.
