Lady D marries the classic house tracks of Chicagos past with the choicest four-to-the-floor stomps of today, and always throws down a soulful and sinful set. Influenced by legends and encouraged by House veterans, The Chicago House scene would be incomplete without Lady D, as stated by Epitonic.com.
Lady D is a prolific writer and poet whose spoken word vocal stylings captured the attention of Felix Da Housecat who remixed her smash, High Again. Her projects have appeared on vinyl (D'lectable, Vista, BlackJack, Body Music, AfterHours) and mixed compilations such as the famed Journeys By DJs series (John Selway mix). As Lady D continues to develop her production skills, she is becoming known for her deft edits and self-produced promotional mixed CDs as well as the now classic, critically acclaimed compilation, Naked Kaleidoscope (AfterHours Music).
Lady D is a world renowned DJ who is respected by her peers, adored by her fans and recognized by media in such outlets as Billboard, International DJ, URB, Venus, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, New City, UR and more. She is featured monthly on UK radio on VibeFM, Whats Happening in the World of Dance Music. After 10 years in the industry, with experience in A&R, production, touring, management and artistry, Lady D reaches another milestone as one of just a few women record label owners/A&R in the world. Her label D'lectable is distributed by Syntax of New York and is known as the hottest label to emerge from Chicago in recent history. The label roster reads like a Who's Who of House with names such as Jamie Principle, Glenn Underground, Mark Grant, Ron Carroll, E-Smoove, Stacy Kidd and many more.
Summer 2005, Lady D led a 10-city summer tour in celebration of her achievements--10 years in the industry and D'lectable's anniversary. To cement the occasion, Dlectable will release PERFECT 10: The Sound of Dlectable, the double disc CD.
Making her name early on mainly as a DJ, Lady D has played for names like Billy Corgan, Queen Latifah, Dennis Rodman and the cast of Cirque Du Soleil. Shes graced decks for fashion giants Diesel, Hugo Boss, Macys and Bloomingdales and cosmetics companies Benefit and Skin Market. Shes opened major concert venues for the likes of Poi Dog Pondering, festivals such as Noise Pop and SummerDance in Grant Park, Sew Down (LA), SxSW (Austin), WMC and played with the top DJs in her field including Sneak, Roy Davis Jr., Kid Koala, Derrick Carter, Sandra Collins, Francois K and much more. Not to mention shes played at or held residence at every important venue in Chicago including Shelter, Dragon Room, House of Blues, Vision, Crobar, Smart Bar, Boom Boom Room and Zentra.
Lady D often contributes her in-demand DJ skills to well-deserved charitable causes and benefits. Lady D has traversed the international dance community and always represented herself as an ambassador of Chicago House music. As she turns her hand to more and more production, Lady D has expanded her discography with a number of productions/edits and remixes. She and SuperJane partner Dayhota recently remixed the L-Word Theme by Betty for the Showtime original series "The L Word". The remix will appear on an upcoming Tommy Boy Records compilation.
In July 2006, Lady D appeared in Chicago's first International House Music Festival (see: www.chicagohousemusicfestival.org) along with Frankie Knuckles, Derrick Carter, Barbara Tucker, Danny Tenaglia and many more.
As early as age 10, XL (a.k.a. Khristaan Hillard) was captured by the deep grooves and beats of t! he under ground. Listening to the Hott Mixx 5 from his bedroom on the South Side of Chicago, he would practice his dance moves and feel the music in his soul. As the House Music movement grew, so did XL. By the age of 16, he was sneaking into the music box to watch early legends like Farley Jackmaster Funk tear up the party. This fueled an uncontrollable passion within him to take to the decks himself. In addition to various DJ’s that inspired him, XL also attributes other musical styles like R&B, Jazz, and Gospel as having deeply influenced his own sound. Over the years, XL has played at various venues throughout Chi-Town, including: Big Wig, Harry’s Velvet Room, Slicks Lounge, Copa, Bar 13, Buzz, Red No. 5, Star Gaze, Betty’s Blue Star, and Beviamo. In his own words:
“House Music first touched me through the Spirit of Dance. It was through the spirit and the vibe that made you feel like no matter what was happening in your life you always felt like you were a part of something special. That’s what influenced me to go deeper into the Movement, not just through dance, but also by playing the music; expressing back the love that was given to me through the sounds of House Music. Musically my life was affected many ways through artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Prince and Roy Ayers.&nbs p; I also have been inspired by turn table legends Gene Hunt (Gene, by the way, is responsible for my first major gig), Mark Grant, Dimitri From Paris and Malcolm Charles. I have been ‘in this’ for almost 20 years now and over that time have been touched by many beautiful things, beautiful people and beautiful music, and by this feel truly blessed. I hope in the next 20 years I can give back all that House Music has given me.”
