Topic: LLV's ROOTS party defies every stereotype of a house event that we whine about 24/7

If I can make a suggestion -- we are pretty deprived of already-established commercial spaces, good sound systems, adequate dancefloors - this is causing schizms between people in their local underground music communities. Everybody has a slightly different idea of what makes an ideal party, and unfortunately not everybody's vision is being realized. This mentality is akin to prisoners infighting over too-little food thrown to them by their captors. I think of this every time people begin to argue over issues related to these styles of music and party. "Prisoner" being the way we perceive ourselves in relation to the rest of the music-enjoying public.
I think party-throwers need to focus on the basics -- what makes a party? Space, sound, people, ambience, food and beverage, social substances? Now, I'm pretty sure there are quite a few independently-owned, ready-to-rent spaces - I see people advertising on Craig's list all the time. What does it take to rent and set up the kind of sound you want? Promote the way you want? Set the place up exactly the way you want? In the space of 3 well-executed parties you are beginning to build a reputation and a foundation. Stop using spaces that already have the baggage of people's perception. Be resourceful and fresh. All it takes is some cash - get a crew together and invest in what could be a future social insitution - your goodwill and investment in people will be returned in spades. Most people are only serious about their consumerism, so you can potentially have a very healthy clientele and not as much competition as you might think!
I intend to follow my own advice - for now I am using a well-known (for better or worse) space for my own shit, but in the time I've been involved with putting together events I've learned that the success of the night is largely dependent on your intention (to be inviting or to be insular? to appeal to or alienate?), your own energy and your promotional efforts reflecting both. Great space and talent can only help!
This obviously has absolutely nothing to do with the virtues of Roots vs. Shelter, but was written in response to the direction the thread has taken. The two venues used by the parties are very different, but the spirit contained in the music isn't, fundamentally. We shouldn't allow ourselves to be polarized like this.
Peace out!

remember this:
1. Shelter - they have the sound system and the space, they charge $20, and Timmy has too much power to make or break a new record in NYC at this point because no-one is challenging this Saturday night oldies romp. The label is (not so surprisingly) suspect. Some really weird shit comes out on there from time to time. Forget skills, you just to be cool with them (black) to release stuff on Shelter.
2. MAW - Far commercial reach. They reach Europeans like no one else in the deep house induzzzztry does. They tease the underlings with promos to keep them from rebelling. Classic tactic used by corrupt governments as seen throughout history. I even received a promo package from them recently and big upped their 7" Box Set on the message boards. I am disgusted with myself. Forget skills, you just to be cool with them (Spanish) to release stuff on MAW.
3. Wave - Pure prestige. At one time if you were cool with Wave, you had some juice at Body & Soul. Since B&S died, they were in a sort of limbo as far as nightlife, but now that Deep Space has started, I've been saying what's up to Matty in clubs again. Francois also has some weird reputation as being a genius, although he apparently lost his mind years ago and started naming his music generic titles like "deep & sexy" in watered down white boy deep house compilations. Forget skills, you just to be cool with them (white) to release stuff on Wave.
4. West End - Not almighty powerful anymore, but a pioneering disco force in the late 70's to mid 80's. Mel Cheren is often cited as the owner of the Garage, which isn't true. It was a big power move when this family drafted Kevin "Blaze" Hedge from the Shelter family, bringing the West End family back up to number 4 on the list. All families felt a little unrest when this happened. Although Kevin is in charge of West End, they still manage to have some suspect releases. Forget skills, you just have to be cool with them (gay) to release stuff on West End.
5. Spiritual Life / Ibadan Families - Although different labels, both families are close knit and are headed by Spiritual leader Joe Claussel. Joe made a lot of noise in the community after he refused to return to B&S. Rumors flew, but those in the know kept their mouths shut, not because of turf wars that may have ensued, but because of a strange curse that may be put upon them if they dared think the truth out loud. A peaceful tribe at best, however not to be fucked with. Their true powers lie in the spirit world. Forget skills, you just have to be cool with them (some sort of Indian) to release stuff on these labels.
6. Q-Tip - Although Q-Tip has zero ties to the deep house scene, he keeps checking in and has already started the necessary groundwork involved to ride the wave to the top if house ever accidentally blows up. His powers stem from his celebrity and status in the hip-hop scene, and the fact that all the poorhouse heads know he has money. They are dangerously quick to accept him and his crew in hopes to ride the wave on his coat tails if the shit really does hit the fan. You have to be cool with him (already have some kind of juice to get him somewhere), to get somewhere with him.
*7. THE GRAND KUOIAN ARMY - They are the most surreptitious and most feared of the 7 families. Ignoring everything that is holy and revered by the other 6 families, they are known to routinely defecate historical house and disco artifacts. This bunch of rowdy miscreants despise such stalwarts of traditional family prestige such as industry recognition, financial/commercial gain, social political correctness, and actual contributions to this thing we call house. All we know for sure is that they have several highly effective, agile operative cells in cities ranging from New York, DC, Chicago, London, San Diego, Los Angelos, Montreal, and Toronto to name a few. It isn't certain how one becomes a member of the GKA, but it is commonly believed that being cool with them (Asian) helps.

The art of a good party is so dam simple - - I still just want a party with nice women, good music, a bit of space, nice atmosphere and decent drinks - now is that too much to ask for
and I hope no one pisses me off by doing handstands next to me on the dancefloor(I HATE THAT SHIT)while im dancing with some blonde getting my groove on - -
By the way I like roots it's cool just a bit expensive @ da bar
Shelter is also nice but I miss the vibe of Club Vinyl
Over here (NJ) I keep my local parties down to about 300 people and keep it very simple, I little of this and a little of that (call me a sellout, call me house, call me comercial I don't give a shit). I'm Not trying to educate people but making sure they get their monies ($10) worth ie: Music, Women and even a light buffet. No matter what anyone says it'a all about customer service. If you keep it simple "they will cum"...
peace steve

Somewhere Bloomberg is sitting down laughing.. reading this.. and taking notes on what kind of venues to shut down and regulations to creat to strangle the parties.
for a dancer.. shelter is still #1 as far as i know. i crave to visit 718.. and maybe have some martinis at roots.. but it just doesn't sound like a dancing experience

WHAT IS A DANCER?

lol .. yeah i'm sure you know. we have the same thing here in LA.. some clubs that are just not condusive of a healthy dancefloor. it just dies .. and dies. some others where people just bounce around like a bunch of brits (big up London).. and then there is one that is always hopping.. and people know floor etiquete.. and give everyone space.. and people are actually able to spin around at their free will.. nice..
on the thread here.
i think a lot of you guys believe and are expressing the same thing. these arguments always happen when we overanalyze ourselves or house music... parties just should be that... fun and entertaining.. once we start talking about them so much people just find issue with things and caboom.. mr v vs lil ray with the whole world watching

Biggest ingredients on why is so successful. . .
1) It's Louie Vega. 2) Trendy Area (already has been written) 3) Word of Mouth, I know alone have brought an additional 20 people that once I exposed them to the joint, they go now on their own when they get a chance.
When I used to hit the Sound Factory Bar over on W 21st, If louie Wasn't Spinning on the main floor, It was DEAD.
