Of course, it's undeniable that he was the funkiest man ever. Ask Prince, Bootsy, Larry Graham and everyone else! And his music influenced us so considerably that we probably wouldn't be the same without all his bad-ass grooves, legendary live dance routines and amazing bands.
But besides this and perhaps even more crucial, he gave so many Black people a reason to hold their head up when they were being put down and treated like dirt, and with his socially conscious lyrics helped them in becoming proud of their identity... This was something so powerful that it can't really be measured up against any musical scale.

Damnit!... HE was the King, not Elvis.
FK
Not to mention the kinds of things he gave away at and after shows too...

I was devastated to hear this. Had a personal moment with him in the mid 80's I think it was. I went completely bananas at one of his shows, he reached out to me from that tiny stage in of all places the Lone Star Cafe, I got to tell him how much he and his music meant to me, what a night that was!
RIP Mr. James Brown.

I'm still thinking aboput all the great musicians that James influenced within his own band. William "Bootsy" Collins, Phelps "Catfish" Collins, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, John "Jabo" Starks, Clyde "The Funky Drummer" Stubblefield, Bobby Byrd, and the list goes on and on. I can't even imagine Parliament without the JB's influence, I can't imagine G-funk (west coast sound inspired by Dr. Dre) without Parliament. I can't imagine Alicia Keys' "Fallen" without hearing "It's a Man's World". I can't imagine LL's "Mama Said Knock You Out" without "Funky Drummer" being it's rhythmic backdrop. I'm just dumbfounded by James' influence. I'm gonna have to listen to James the rest of the week just to honor him correctly.

Talk about influence. We would not have Afrobeat as we know it today without the powerful influence James Brown had on Fela (when he traveled to the States)

True. Fela used James as his musical inspiration.

I got a chance to see him at the Park West here in Chicago years ago. He was all that he comes across to be on TV and very humble.
I was honored to be in the audience.
Rest in Peace James. We love you.

I'm playing his music all damn day.
Here's a classic JB clip..
Sex Machine-Live in Paris
Jamie I felt the same way yesterday, I heard about before i went to sleep, but it really hit me yesterday while I was taking a shower v103 in atlanta had a jb mix on at 12, and the first song was payback, my eyes teared up cause that song waqs the song that really got me into jbs back in the 80's. There is no artist out there that is involved in all the music I play, house, steppin, hip hop(where would hip hop be without him), and skating music. Friday and Saturday nights at 31st beach jb's were a must. The man was way ahead of his time. The best jb mix I've heard was from sadar back in 89, I had that tape thru out college, whenever I got tired from driving from NC to Chicago that tape got me energized. Thanks JB for the hits.
