I heard this earlier today on the morning news.Think it's time to stop eating meat...
Final approval of cloned animals for food is months away • FDA: Cloned food safe; doesn't need special labeling • Many consumers are uncomfortable with the idea of cloning • FDA: Coned animals "virtually indistinguishable" from normal livestock Adjust font size: WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government has decided that food from cloned animals is safe to eat and does not require special labeling.
The Food and Drug Administration planned to brief industry groups in advance of an announcement Thursday morning. The FDA indicated it would approve cloned livestock in a scientific journal article published online earlier this month.
Consumer groups say labels are a must, because surveys have shown people to be uncomfortable with the idea of cloned livestock. (Watch as these groups outline ethical concerns and the 'yuck' factor -- 1:45 )
However, FDA concluded that cloned animals are "virtually indistinguishable" from conventional livestock and that no identification is needed to judge their safety for the food supply.
"Meat and milk from clones and their progeny is as safe to eat as corresponding products derived from animals produced using contemporary agricultural practices," FDA scientists Larisa Rudenko and John C. Matheson wrote in the January 1 issue of Theriogenology.
Labels should only be used if the health characteristics of a food are significantly altered by how it is produced, said Barb Glenn of the Biotechnology Industry Organization.
"The bottom line is, we don't want to misinform consumers with some sort of implied message of difference," Glenn said. "There is no difference. These foods are as safe as foods from animals that are raised conventionally."
Critics of cloning say the verdict is still out on the safety of food from cloned animals.
"Consumers are going to be having a product that has potential safety issues and has a whole load of ethical issues tied to it, without any labeling," said Joseph Mendelson, legal director of the Center for Food Safety.
Carol Tucker Foreman, director of food policy at the Consumer Federation of America, said the FDA is ignoring research that shows cloning results in more deaths and deformed animals than other reproductive technologies.
The consumer federation will ask food companies and supermarkets to refuse to sell food from clones, she said.
"Meat and milk from cloned animals have no benefit for consumers, and consumers don't want them in their foods," Foreman said.
The FDA scientists wrote that by the time clones reached 6 to 18 months of age, they were virtually indistinguishable from conventionally bred animals.
Final approval of cloned animals for food is months away; the FDA will accept comments from the public after issuing a draft risk assessment on Thursday.
Those in favor of the technology say it would be used primarily for breeding and not for steak or pork tenderloin.
Cloning lets farmers and ranchers make copies of exceptional animals, such as pigs that fatten rapidly or cows that are superior milk producers.
"It's not a genetically engineered animal; no genes have been changed or moved or deleted," Glenn said. "It's simply a genetic twin that we can then use for future matings to improve the overall health and well-being of the herd."
Thus, consumers would mostly get food from their offspring and not the clones themselves, Glenn said.
Still, some clones would eventually end up in the food supply. As with conventional livestock, a cloned bull or cow that outlived its usefulness would probably wind up at a hamburger plant, and a cloned dairy cow would be milked during her breeding years.
That's unlikely to happen soon, because FDA officials have asked farmers and cloning companies since 2001 to voluntarily keep clones and their offspring out of the food supply. The informal ban would remain in place for several months while FDA accepts comments from the public.
Approval of cloned livestock has taken five years because of pressure from big food companies nervous that consumers might reject milk and meat from cloned animals.
To produce a clone, the nucleus of a donor egg is removed and replaced with the DNA of a cow, pig or other animal. A tiny electric shock coaxes the egg to grow into a copy of the original animal. Cloning companies say it's just another reproductive technology, such as artificial insemination, yet there can be differences between the two because of chance and environmental influences.
Some surveys have shown people to be uncomfortable with food from cloned animals; 64 percent said they were uncomfortable in a September poll by the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology, a nonpartisan research group.
I ain't feeling this shit one bit.I also think we already have been eating cloned animals.Cloning is not new.Mad cow anyone? [ December 28, 2006, 09:54 AM: Message edited by: Jamie 3:26 ]

Technically, if you have been Eating Jumbo Buffalo Wings from any mom and pop's Chicken Shack, You're already being induced with Hormones and Biologicaly (lab) reproduced Poultry that has a Grade of D. Good Example; look at a pre-teen Female and notice how she's over Develop. 13 year old Female with a 30 yr. old Body. This has been brought up so many times in the Science - Biomedical sector, but swept under the rug from the FDA. I hate to say this, but truth Hurts...Blacks are nothing more but Incognito Health and Food Experiments because we lack the knowledge of what we put in our Bodys. Ever wonder why you really can't shake that Newport Habit...?

I'm in favor of cloned meat. If you've ever seen the conditions that the animals we eat live in, the torture, suffering and filth. before they make it all neat, styrofoamed and plastic wrapped to the fresh meat section of the grocery store, it's enough to turn even the strongest stomach. Heartbreaking, really. (like the clipping and burning of chicken beaks, to keep them from hurting each other)
this video is mild in comparison to the reality of what we eat
It'd take a little getting used to, but go ahead, grow my chicken wings on a vine/vein. It's a better alternative
we don't eat real food anyway. if you've ever eaten free range chicken, you know there's a BIG difference in taste. And when's the last time you saw some seeds in your fruits and vegetables. Even bananas have seeds. What's up with that?

Either way it goes, you will be eating cloned or genetically munipulated food in some form or another. A lot of vegtables and fruits have been genetically modified for years.
The thing is, no one knows the long term effects on any of this.

the truth is most Blacks and Hispanics dont care, most are too ignorant and uneducated to be able to care, (i was hollering about this 3 months ago) it's so pathetic... wait till Nano technology kicks in , I've personally have given up on my race and Blacks, sad but true...hey i guess we can always sing and dance....and pray to the Lord , whatahh joke! read a science book or sign a petition instead , MoFoes! lets see how many pages this thread gets, as opposed to some superficial big guzzling suv / bling bling post, for sure looking good is more important to many of us than being healthy or reading up on a issue that effects the future well being of ourselves and children,,most of us are shallow and deserve what we get.

hey sean c'mon at the minimum there should be a label informing folks of what they're shoving down their bodies, please look at how deteriorated the health of minority young adults haved become in just one generation (20 years), alot of folks arent even reaching 40yrs, obesity, diabetes, depression, lupus, osteoporosis, arthritis, leaky gut, i can go on for a whole page, most are auto immune deficient related diseases, 20 years ago 1 in 3,000 newborns where born with mental diseases , today its 1 in 166!, i have 2 good friends that have beautiful newborns that are autistic (mentally dis abled) that shit is foul! it happens in black communities more than in any other yet i dont hear anyone in the black communities speaking on this.

The FDA is one of the scariest & possibly most corrupt govt agencies. FDA testing must be a really easy litmus test because they're constantly recalling products that pass FDA approval.
Sad but we'll all be eating "Dolly" burgers soon? Unfortunately only time will tell what effects we'll see as a consequence.

I totally agree! I was mostly responding to people saying they were going to become vegetarian. It sucks that there is no way of escaping all this modification when it comes to food. Of course, labeling the food would be very helpful but as stated before, dumb people wouldn't care where it came from, they'd still eat it.

Good news. Cloned meat sounds weird, but probably not much more harmful than the caca we've been scarfing down since the 50s. The organic food industry isn't all wholesome and mom and pop neither. I'll dig up the Business Week article for ya'll.
And vegetarian schmegiterian. It won't save you from the need to consume processed goods, packaged in places you will never visit. Nobody is safe, so I don't even buy the "poisonin the Black Man" thing. As far as I know, Whole Foods doesn't use Bull Connor for security.
My point is, we never "really" know what it is that we are consuming. Unless we do intensive research on our preferred brands or grow our own stuff, we just whistlin dixie.
And lastly, if you do not like the idea of the stuff they have in the aisles for you, start your own grocery shop with people in your own community, and make sure you buy extensively from the "Ms Friday Fresh Farm"

I used one of my pennies to look up the definition of cloned: Cloning is the process of creating an identical copy of an original. A clone in the biological sense, therefore, is a single cell (like bacteria, lymphocytes etc.) or multi-cellular organism that is genetically identical to another living organism.
My opinion has not changed. Furthermore, while I'm not a religious person, I am familiar with scripture quote: God said, "I have given you every plant with seeds on the face of the earth and every tree that has fruit with seeds. This will be your food.
which effectively x's out all meat and mushrooms. Weird as it may sound to some, I'm way more comfortable with cloned meat. Studies have found that stress, fear and pain when animals are being slaughtered or waiting to be slaughtered results in several disease processes in the humans which eat the meat.
like I said, chicken grown on the vine/vein sounds like a better choice to me.
(.02 really goes far these days)

WORD! try your local co-ops...try moving to a place that is more rural than urban (with intact farms)...like markb said "fight back"...there are options...but just like mainstream music, cats want to just sit back and be fed and complain when they're being fed shit.
